Hey ppl,
i got a new psp slim and the guy i bought from installed the custom firmware (3.81 m33 5) and charged me for the same. Now tat v 3.90 has released, there would be a custom firmware for it as well.. now my question is would i have to keep updating to a new custom firmware everytime 1 gets released, or is it ok if i continue using this 1 ?
I mean would it become mandatory to update the firmware to play the latest games? If so, could someone help me in doing it so that i dont end up paying something, everytime i want to update my firmware.
The PSP downgrading guide didn't seem relevant for v3.81, so didn't post this topic there.

Any help would be appreciated !!

Thx.

There is no need for you to update in the near future.

For example, when Sony released the 3.40 update, people were still using 2.70 OE (M33's older name) and could play all games.

Updating after you already have M33 firmware is very easy. 3.9 M33 is not out as yet, but when it is , the update process should be similar to updating from a lower edition to 3.80.
Look at a guide here.

so you mean apart from the features that the firmware may add (like skype support in the latest version), there is no other reason why i shud update the firmware..

Yeah, that's right.

In some cases it may even be a bad idea to update because some older homebrew programs may not work on the newer firmware. (my ereader stopped working when I moved to 3.80. Had to look for the new version trawling through chinese forums using google translate)

3.80 M33 onwards supports network updates. Just connect to and internet enabled wifi network and use the network update feature in your psp.

it might need to be enabled from the recovery menu.(R-Trigger+power on).

Cheers.

if we do a network update will it install the latest custom firmware or the latest official firmware?

The latest custom firmware. One of the new features of the M33 firmwares.
[Like elendil said, it has to be enabled in the recovery menu which is accessed by holding Right Trigger button while starting the system]

okie thanks for clearing my doubt. So, suppose i have M33 3.72, can i just do a n/w update and move to latest firmware? In normal upgradation process i have to upgrade to 3.80 M33 first, then M33-1, M33-2 and so on.

Yes, that should work.

[Though you don't need to go "3.80 M33 first, then M33-1, M33-2 and so on.". 3.80M33 and then update 4 directly will install everything. Each update has the fixes of the previous updates included.]

i still have a doubt. You are saying that for installing 3.80 M33-4 i have to install 3.80 M33 first, then i can install M33-4 directly. But if i am doing a network update from 3.72 M33-2, do i need to do anything extra. I think the install process should automatically install 3.80 M33 first and then the latest incremental update. So, as a end user i don't need to do anything extra except choosing network update from the psp menu. Is that correct?

3.72 M33 does not have the feature. 3.80 M33 does.

So from 3.80 onwards, you can use the network to upgrade. When you said earlier

I thought you meant it as an example.

Do not attempt a network update if you are on 3.72 M33.
