Hi all
I've recently bought a samsung 500GB sata hdd (HD502HI EcoGreen)
I'm trying to connect to my motherboard Intel 946GZIS which supports sata hdds at 3GB/s according to intel spec sheet. But the machine is getting freezed at the BIOS startup screen for about 20-30secs and then even in Bios the HDD is not getting detected. I tried proceeding to install xp. Even it said No Hard disk found!
Can any one help me regarding this?

Here is what i've tried.
1. I 've checked the sata cable, power cord. They are okay. The same hdd with same cables is working fine when connected to my friend's Asus G31 motherboard which was some one year old.
2. I checked the BIOS settings for SATA. They are ENABLEd
3. I tried connecting the jumper in all possible modes. ( Even I tried 1.5GB/s jumper setting suggested by samsung here.
4. I've updated the bios to the latest from intel.
5. I 've tried disconnecting old hdd and optical drives..keeping the new sata hdd connected.

None of the trails gave me any improvement in the scene
I'm not able figure it out which can go wrong. Can any one help me if check some thing more to figure the problem out. or fix it some how?

Thank you

What is your SATA set at, I think is set at SATA, you need to set it at IDE, by default XP does not have any SATA or Mass Storage Drivers, did this thing work before

If you have any questions PM me, might be able to help, have the same Hdd...

samsung hdds ?. Long back have heard about them and many stories regarding their issues. Very notorious. Why did you go and buy samsung hdd when we have seagate and WD mate ?. Anyway. Unless your HDD is set to IDE mode in BIOS, you cant install xp in it.

@ Tommy_vercetti - you mean xp doesnt come with inbuilt sata drivers ?. Who said so ?. I am using xp sp3 and using a 500gb sata hdd and m able to install xp flawlessly in it. It doesnt ask for any drivers while installing..

@H20 - Didnt you read the title of this thread ?. The OP states that his hdd is not getting detected in bios itself. But you say that the mode of operation should be change. Not at all relevant. Irrespective of the mode of operation, the hdd should 1st of all be detected in the BIOS. So hdd detection has nothing to do with mode of operation. The mode of operation will have effect only after XP is installed in IDE mode after which the AHCI drivers should be installed in XP, then the setting in bios should be changed to AHCI. This method is for using the HDD in AHCI mode.

Hope its clear now...

Are you in India? Where'd you get Samsung HDDs from?

most dealers are now stacking up samsung sata hdds... at lammy, and even in my locality.
did not check the drive series because of my bad experience with samsung pata drives... although samsung service center is a kilometer away from my place.
will update about whatever that is available in samsung at dealers by evening :)

Thank you all of you. I got it in CTC, Hyderabad for 2.4k
As you said "set it to IDE mode". Can any one let me know how I can do this ?
Should I do some thing in the BIOS or some thing with the jumper on the new SATA HDD?

This you have to do in bios. But this will be the default factory setting. Unless you have changed this setting before , by default it will be set to IDE mode only. In BIOS look for something which says Sata mode select. This is as per my motherboard BIOS which is nvidia chipset /ASUS .

But in your motherboard, though you cant see the exact name you can find something similar to this. You must have 3 options in that probably. IDE, SATA and RAID mode. Select SATA mode and do the rest as i have instructed you to do in my previous post.

But IMO your motherboard should first of all detect your hdd irrespective of the mode as i have stated earlier. If you still have a doubt, then check your hdd with AHCI or RAID setting in your friends mobo and see whether it gets detected. If it gets detected, then these settings have nothing to do with HDD detection.. This is for your satisfaction only. I am pretty sure about this...

The Samsung F1 drives are damn fast.. as fast as the VelociRaptors. Would recommend them as non-SSD boot drives.

@ anfjavid

I 've tried checking for the SATA mode select.. I could not similar mode settings . But my mother board have some thing related to hdd. You can see the option in the image below

That ATA/IDE has options for "Legacy" and "native". I tried with both the option though but no use :(

I also tried a Seagate 160GB SATA 7200 hdd with my motherboard. With that also same case.- So I realize that there is nothing wrong with the samsung hdd.
It is also taking a lot of time at post screen. may be for about 30-40 secs!

Actually there is some thing you all should know. The mother board which I'm using right now was a replaced one by intel 6 months ago as the my orginal mobo was gave up some problems. At that time I remember filling up a form kind of thing to intel in which I gave the details of the existing hardware in my machine. So at that time I didnt write about sata hdd. So Will intel give me a customized mobo which works only with my mother board?
Can mother board be the culprit?

I have no clue what to do?

Please suggest me if I can do any other thing.

It may happen that the battery (internal which is inside the motherboard) is fused where the total BIOS settings like HDD priority, time and date, password etc saved.
Please check that the battery is in good condition or not.

for SATA legacy mode is the same as IDE mode.

have you tried the drive in any other PC?

If it does not get detected on another PC, then you need to get it replaced with help from your dealer.

@ animalcare
I am getting my other settings in bios, time etc stored. and I also have checked the battery by taking it out. It looks fine. But any ways I rubbed it with a cloth and placed it again thinking of any static on it. but no use

@axeman
I tried the same hdd with same cable on an ASUS G31 motherboard which was around an year old. It got detected in the bios
and I also tried connecting seagate 7200.12 160GB SATA hdd , LG SATA DVD writer to my motherboard. For both of them it is the same case as before.

So I doubt if there could be a problem with the settings in mobo or with sata ports in the mobo. Please let me know if I can try any thing else.
