Hiya!

I plan to buy a new system and I have a few Qs

Am looking for a system that would convert video files ie. avi to dvd and vice-versa very quickly

Would having a better video card help or having a faster proccy?

Would a processor with hyperthreading help better or a dual core or an AMD?
What is the best proccy/mobo (value for money-wise keping the above in mind)

Would having 2GB RAM significantly help speed up the process as opposed to 1GB?

Any help/input would be much appreciated.

Thanks
espeez.

Well, for Video encoding, yes, more RAM is better.

You have to go Dual core, if you want the Encoding done quickly :).

Whats your Budget, and how soon do you have to buy?

Get any ATI x1300/x1600/x1800 card and use the ATI AVIVO transcoder. Its the fastest transcoder currently known... by a *huge* margin.

Thx for the replies.

@ Aditya : Budget isnt really huge hmm maybe 20k for the proccy/mobo. Just want a basic mobo. Just want a machine to be kept on 24/7 to download stuff and do the conversion once a while. No gaming at all.
@ Chaos : Do you have the approx. prices for the ATI x1300/x1600/x1800 cards and if its avail. in Bangalore. And is ATI AVIVO transcoder a software/firmware or hardware? and approx. price if you have em offhand
PS : Am currently using a 3800+ x2/Asus SLI mobo/6200 fx card with 1GB RAM with 32bit Win XP and am getting about 2X speeds while converting avi to dvd
Would installing the 64bit version of WinXP make any difference in conversion speeds?

Thanks
espeez.

:) In sp road the ati cards are available(sapphire brand). Also you will get msi and asus cards. It is hard to comment on the exact price as they are very fluctuating. The x1600 will probably be in 11k-13k range.:)Since you won't game the x1600 will be more than enough

The ATI AVIVO video converter is software. The hitch is you have to have an Ati X1000 series graphics card to use it (and there is no "ahem" version that ive heard of). The X1300 and X1600 cards are readily available. The X1300 costs around 4.5 while the X1600 pro costs around 8k.

So get any of those graphics cards, dosent matter which as there is no hardware acceleration involved and its all done in software. Id say keep ur existing CPU and mobo. Upgrade to 2 GB RAM though. That will help.
