Ubuntu boots (from CD) Comes up to a light fawn coloured screen.
Then goes to a black screen with a white dot and rotating black dots within.
Next, to a black screen and pointer and thats it...Stuck.

Left it for five mins no activity in the Cd drive!! Can't eject the drive - It's in wonderland, I presume :ohyeah:

I reboot - Windows is not happy that I'm ejecting the Cd. Tug of war with the half ejected tray.. I win :ohyeah: - yank out the Cd

Does one need to run "MD5SUM on Linux" to check the download. If this is required, how in the dickens does one do it? I'ts a recommendation before burning the ISO -to authenticate the Download.

Thanks in advance, this is all quite interesting. :)

^^Lol Nice one :P

1. It seems your system is not fully supported by *Ubuntu* :P , anyways when the Ubuntu menu arrives where it list option to boot from Disk, Hard Disk and blah blah.. Press F6 and type this

Code:
 acpi=off nolapic noapic

Do update with your system configuration.. Also I would say postpone your Linux tour for now.. Wait for few days ... There will be new release raining every where :P So better wait , you can explore till then from Lice mode and Virtual System..

In addition to trying the above options, if there is a safe mode option just select that while booting... it should select VESA graphics driver which hopefully will at least get video working...

Dark Star and Vishalrao, thanks for the response. My bad - was unclear. I just want to to run the 8.10 from the Cd - to try, which is an option. I'm on a p4 1.8Running XP home can graphics be an issue!!? I don't see a safe mode option .. Will try again tomorrow morning, maybe I missed it, it's all to new...

Got in via VESA (F4) option. Thanks guys :)
And now running in regular mode on a R52 ThinkPad
Cheers..

Here's the prob got only about 11Gb from a total of 33 GB left on the Lappy.
I can free up another 4.5GB by transferring Pics to an external HD/Pen drive
Is 15Gb free good enough.

And if your willing to walk me through it awesome.

Oh, just 33gb? Maybe you should leave it then :) unless you really want to install it for daily use...

Single partition at the moment on the HDD?

backup all important files to external storage assuming you will destroy all data (assume the worst), then defragment all partitions...

then during ubuntu installation's partitioning phase choose guided and see if you can get the partition to shrink.

if not download the gparted bootable ISO and shrink your partition so that you have about 6 gb free space, out of that you can select 1gb for swap and 5gb for linux to mount on root /

Yes you are correct 33Gb. The second partition is the protected restore one.
So just over 30Gb on C: This is close to five Yrs old!!

I definitely want to to try Linux.

What I'll do is, dual boot it on one of the less used Pc's at my office. Incase I wreak it!!
Experiment and learn about the OS from you guys.

A new Lappy is on the anvil. I was waiting for the official Win7 launch. Ouch.. Hope I haven't committed sacrilege mentioning this here!!

Will dual boot then.

Few Ques though - why are there so many Distro's to choose from. Is there a best, or does it boil down to personal choice. Do they all function the same? And why are new updated options available so soon? Does one keep changing? Phew....

Thanks again & Cheers..

Yes, there are regular updates pushed out to Linux distros for bug fixes and security fixes, even Windows these days receives regular updates.

As far as choosing a distro, to keep things simple, stick to Ubuntu, or as a second option, if you want to try out KDE, get Mandriva (the upcoming 2009.1 release should be good).
