OC & Modding New to overclocking. Need guidance.

I am on Intel E6550(2.33 GHz) with ASUS P5K-VM.

I am able to overclock just by changing the FSB in the BIOS. The bios shows me that the range is 200-800, but i know 800 isnt possible, so not trying. The max ability written in the mobo user guide is 3.8Ghz. The default value was 333Mhz, i changed it to 350, then changed with an interval of 10 MHz. I have reached 430 and it still works great at 3.01Ghz . The idle default temperature is 28C(with no OC), and with 420MHz, it reaches 32C idle and with some internet and songs use it reaches max 35C. I have reverted back to 2.5 GHz.

I want to know if i am not doing anything wrong.

I am on E6550 + ASUS P5K-VM.
I am using onboard graphics.
Apart from having one common fan at the back, one CPU fan and ofcourse the PSU, iam using one more fan that circulates air within the cabinet located around North Bridge.

Somehow, my CPU fan never exceeds 950 RPM even after selecting the performance mode option from BIOS. And i have even overclocked my CPU(for 24x7) from 2.33 GHz to 2.52 GHz and at idle mode, it barely reaches 16C(it even drops upto 12C at times) and when playing GTA Vice City, it reaches 28C max.

My mobo although stays in 32-44C range.

You might think i am kidding on that 12C CPU temp., but i am myself pretty confused.

And i dunno why my fan speed never increases even after reaching 38C by using "Orthos" :mad: .


I wanted to ask before trying, what if i increase my FSB further?

What are the parameters i need to watch other than temperatures?

What happens when i exceed the limit?

Will it cause me any trouble if i only attempt to overclock by changing just the FSB?
 
hmm...the temps seems too good to be true...what is the ambient temp???try coretemp 0.95/speedfan etc. for monitoring temps. As a simple rule, on air your CPU cannot work below ambient temp. So untill your system is working in a server room these temps cannot be possible.

After reading ur post today, i re-assembled all the parts. Each and every part was connected again.
I also think that its not possible to have such low CPU temperature. My room temperature is around 28C.
But what can i do?
Even in the BIOS its showing me below 20 all the time. I have used every famous application that shows system stats like Everest, COREtemp, CPU-Z, Orthos, speedfan etc.

Overclocking is also not able to increase the temperature much. So what do i assume? The system works great, above par. I dont know what to do :huh: :huh:

well dude..there nthin mch left besides..a MASSSIVE OVERCLOCK.......uve got urself a unique chip .....to enjoy all the way the revolutionary performance....

The Limit of mobo is 3.8 GHz :rofl: :rofl: :rofl:

Still i wouldnt like to mess up :hap5: :hap5: . Might try when i feel like buying a new CPU.

One more thing, generally overclockers stay below 500 MHz FSB, but then wats the point in giving a limit of 200 to 800 MHz in the BIOS? I mean 800 sounds MASSIVE. :S :ashamed:

PS : anybody would like to buy this unique chip. umm around 15k :lol:
 
thats because present day CPU kinda reaches limit by 500Mhz FSB and if you exceed then it hits the memory performance as well, so your mobo is made up so that you can use it for the next 5 years when they can utilize those extra FSBs...:)....btw if the other softwares are showing the same temp then there is nothing you can do, just enjoy but yeah dont overclock it too much coz it does not seem right, but thats my personal opinion.

I already have coretemp, and it shows 22C when overclocked to 3.01 GHz. :eek:hyeah:
I will download that Intel TAT thing and let u know :D
 
Those are nice temps dude, no doubt...what abt voltages what you kept ?

I just bought 6550 with 650i mobo..I'm gonna overclock and let you know my temps.

Although even without overclockin they are 30C :p ... so no comparison wid urz ... I think ur processor made for Eskimos :p

I kept voltages automatic, increased just the FSB :eek:hyeah:
Actually, i have a considerably big cabinet. :D

And if it was made for the Eskimos, then i wouldnt have got the HSF with it :bleh:
