I have a ASUS P320. I want to run GPS on it and use maps for navigation.

I have downloaded and installed OSMTracker and OSM India maps.

When I run the program, I get a blank screen on all tabs. There is an indicator on the right top corner of the screen which is just flickering continuously.

Any idea what all this means, and how I can get some meaningful activity going on the phone?

Plus, is it absolutely necessary to use a GPS antenna with the device? I dont have one and dont know where to buy it either - in case it is required.

Thanks in advance!

No nothing is necessary. But I think GPRS sometimes is very necessary.

Like I use google apps on my tytn II which works sexily with GPS. But it needs GPRS to download maps always.

I don't know clearly about satguide or mapmyindia etc.

GPRS is not necessary, only the google maps need GPRS as all the maps in this application is in online. Other applications use offline maps.

@ B&T: you don't need an external antena. Try installing some other application with maps (like, mapmyindia, satguide, etc)

Are you Ajay of tbhp? :)

Yup, thats me! :D

I do not have GPRS service. Where could I get mapmyindia software or so? Is it possible to get a trial version to see if it works before actually buying it?

Am on a p320 , i use Google maps and it works absolutely fine but yes u need a GPRS connection.

With regards to your queries:

External Antenna:

No its not actually required, what you got in the box is an external antenna connector like the one we get fixing inside the car. To which and external gps antenna pin can be connected for better reception. From my practical experience the external antenna is not required for city navigation the SIRFstarIII chip in the p320 is pretty powerful gps unit for its caliber.

Tracking in OSM

To stop and start tracking in in OSM you need to assign hotkeys i guess,

why don't you try mgmaps if you are particular about offline maps.

You need make your own maps and that does some some time and you need a good broadband connexon the maps need can be saved to an sd card, but once you have the maps done its nirvana you dont have to have GPRS connection.

mgmaps link : Map Creation Tool for MGMaps

The flickering light you are talking about (blue led ) shows that the GPS receiver has been initialized however i doesn't mean that its locked on to satellites.

Thanks to gmano and everyone else, navigation is working perfectly on my phone.

Mapmyindia has some delhi locations stored as home, favorites, POIs etc, how do I get rid of all of them? Is there a reset somewhere?
