I wanted to register a domain name (.in or .co.in) which could point to my geocities homepage. A list of accredited registrars is maintained at the official .In registry Is there any reason why one should be preferred over another when I only want a domain name and not hosting? Is the price factor only thing that seperates them or is there any other relevant factor to be taken into account?

Second is it possible the domain name points to my computer (with dynadys service maybe?) but if this does not work (like my computer switched off), it redirects to geocities homepage instead? If possible, will it cost anything extra?

Umm...lets see. I wanted to ask something else too..duh... I forget :@

Well, net4domains was responsible for TE downtime arnd diwali, so it should be avoided.

And no, the dydns service will not be available to you, UNLESS one of the above registrars provides it.

What is the role of a domain name Registrar e.g. indiatimes? When URL redirection is provided (hope this is the right term in context of my original post) is the Registrar merely an intermediary or does the redirection actually takes place at Registrar's level? If it is the latter, then the Registrar's reliability may be a relevant factor otherswise not, isnt it?

Well its always better to go to the most reliable registrar who provides you more features. Coz imagine what would happen if you want to change the nameserver entries and you cant.

The registrar is more like a intermediary. When you update the nameserver entries (the IP address where to redirect your domain) in the userpanel at your registrar, the same info gets propogated to all the DNS servers. Thats the only role of your registrar. To propogate the changes when you make them.

The redirection of domain to your website when someone enters that in his browser depends on his ISP's DNS server and has got nothing to do with your registrar.

However when people get their own virtual/dedicated servers they need to get their own nameservers entries registered. This is just an entry that is created for free as per ICANN rules by your registrar. But not all registrars let you manage that onyour own. Thats the prob we faced with net4domains. They wont let us do it and were asking for 2K per month for that. They thought we need to physically setup a DNS server. Morons.

Anyway I would seriously suggest that you avoid any indian registrars. The best in the business are godaddy.com and namecheap.com. Namsecheap even provide free proxy services, using which you can keep your contact info hidden from whois services. If you dont have a credit card then you can contact me and Ill suggest you some alternatives. You can see I am that serious about indian registrars.

And yes most of the times they are not registrars. They are just resellers of some registrars. SO it would be better if you enquire whose service are they actually selling. Again namecheap and godaddy, remember those names.
