Hello Folks,

I was planning to get the 'Nexus Media Importer' app for my Nexus 2012 (4.4.2) but before that I have some queries and would appreciate if someone could answer them:

1. Does the Nexus Media Importer work seamlessly on the Nexus 7 2012 tab?

2. Can I connect and use a 16/32GB MicroSD card through a generic card reader via a OTG cable to the tab and will the Media Importer read video files from the card?

3. Can I also attach an external HDD via the OTG cable and use the Media Importer to read files from it?

Anything else that I should know before buying the Nexus Media Importer app and installing it on my Nexus 7?

TIA
Regards,
Black_Hawk

I haven't used nexus media importer, as I always root and install stickmount, but to answer some of your questions.

- Stickmount works.
- Flash drive works via OTG , not sure abt SD cards, should work though.
- Yes, Ext HDD works with stickmount.

Only HDDs having External power supply i.e. 3.5" Form Factor Drives will work.

2.5" drive won't because they need more power to operate which tablets and phone can't provide.

afaik, this applies to 2013 Nexus 7. 2012 Nexus 7 has enough in it to power up external HDD's, without any power supply. Even if it doesn't work, you can buy a Y cable to get the work done. Either way, it will definitely work.

2.5 drive works for N7 2012. I am using it.

But it will drain out the battery very fast. Saw one episode (47 minute) and battery was down by 40%.

Thanks for all the replies guys, appreciate it! :)

Bought and installed 'Nexus Media Importer' from the Play Store. Installation went smooth and then I proceeded to connect a 8GB MicroSD card via the generic card reader that I have to the Nexus 7. The Media Importer auto-detected the card and started up. The files showed up all nice and dandy and I could play the videos like a charm with MX Player Pro. I won't be connecting a HDD but what I will be doing is buying a 32GB MicroSD card soon and loading it up with movies and shows that I plan to watch onto it. Cheers guys and once again thanks for the help!

Yup, it certainly is a nifty little app.

I actually had an OTG cable lying with me. Had got it along with the Micromax Funbook tab that I had bought long time back. Don't use the Funbook any longer but the cable came in handy!

Good to know its working fine! Congrats! One question: Can nexus-media-importer be used for browsing the net? Means - can i connect dongle (thru OTG) and access the net after installing this nexus-media-importer app?. (I do not have wifi setup), but have a dongle with 3G data sim.

Root your Nexus 7 with the Nexus Root Toolkit. Install PPP Widget and you are good to go.
Rooted a friend's Nexus 7 last week and his Huawei dongle worked like a charm. Only problem is that after you have disconnected from internet and removed the dongle, the widget won't detect the dongle unless you restart the tablet.
