@qf, i think the freeze up's are happening @ ingame cutscenes, as your freeze happens exactly during a certain point.
there is a option which disables them, not sure, i dont have it installed now.

I didn't face any stuttering in the first place at 1280 2xaa with just 512mb ram and I have many apps like joy2key, fraps, objectdock, y'z shadow, d-color etc. loading at startup (a total of 32 on a fresh boot).
I did get a slight 1ms hiccup thing every now and then, damn irritating in a fast racing game like this. Does this cache tweak fix that?
Enabling vsync kinda fixed that by locking framerate to 30, but that's cheap (although a locked framerate does feel much better).
