'No link' between cellphones and brain tumours

The largest study so far has found no evidence of a link between cellphone use and brain tumours.

UK researchers interviewed 966 people from across Britain diagnosed with brain tumours, as well as 1716 apparently healthy controls between December 2000 and February 2004.

The epidemiological survey found no evidence that using a cellphone increased the risk of developing a tumour or that prolonged usage increased risk either.

The study did find an association between the location of a tumour and side of the head that patients said they most often used to make calls. But when the team considered handedness – which correlates to the side of the head to which cellphones are most commonly held – there was no link.

In light of the overall study results the researchers believe the association was an anomaly – they suggest these patients most probably misremembered their cellphone usage, in an effort to explain the tumour.

Not for children

Several previous studies have pointed towards possible connections between cellphone usage and brain tumours. These include a Swedish study in April 2004 showing a correlation between cellphone use and auditory nerve tumours and Dutch research published in October 2003, linking cellphones to impaired brain function.

In January 2005 the UK's National Radiological Protection Board produced a report that also found no evidence to suggest cellphone use is harmful. But the NRPB recommended a "precautionary approach" and said cellphones should not be given to children under the age of 8, because they might be more susceptible than adults to any ill effects of cellphone radiation.

The new research was carried out by the Universities of Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham and the Institute of Cancer Research in the UK, with funding from the UK government and several cellphone companies. It represents part of a wider, ongoing study called Interphone, which will eventually incorporate evidence gathered from 13 different countries.

In the country

Anthony Swerdlow at the UK's Health Protection Agency, and one of the study team, cautions against drawing any absolute conclusions from the results. He adds that the relatively short time span of widespread cellphone use makes it difficult to draw strong conclusions. "There will still be some uncertainty for a long time," he says.

However, Lennart Hardell at the University of Örebro, Sweden, questions the validity of the research. In May 2005 he published the results of a study carried out in Sweden, which suggested a link between cellphone use in rural areas – where mobiles often pump out their maximum radiation – and an increased risk of developing brain cancer. "Bedside interviews are problematic with [brain tumour] patients because that can have cognitive problems," he told New Scientist.

Hardell suggests it will be at least 10 years before any firm conclusions can be drawn about the long term health risks of cellphone use.

dipdude,

Trust only 50/50 on such studies. As 99% time such gimmik studies were conducted by or ask for same form a Firm or Brand who mailnly selling such products.

I have personal ecperience of Headach when I use Walkman for 1 hr and same problem with Phone used for 30 minutes (I think magent effect which are inside speaker).

So remeber "Precaution is Better than Cure"

Allwasy hold your phone on left side ear while using.(advised in US medical Journal)

@stick : headache while using walkman for an hour or cellphone for 30 mins is most likely due to loud sounds entering your ear and that causes the noise protection mechanism of our body to fatigue and will transmit high frequency sounds are transmited to your sound processing pathway.

try reducing your gadget`s volume while listening and talking that will help you a lot.

those studies are just part of a learning process, so relying on them completely or ignoring them completely both is not advisable.

earlier this kind of thread had come up and then also i had advised that these studies and data are strictly for use of medical professionals only. so any publication of it with no explanation may be damaging to common people.

well these studies are not sponsored or doctored but you may lot of contradicting studies because of method, target population, tasks of study.

well what i believe is that cell phone them selves do not emit any kind of radiation what all they do is interact with nearby cell tower to be in network which is a kind of electromagnetic radiation we encounter in our daily life.

of they were so dangerous they would not have been launched at all. examples of simillar types of radiation are radio, tv, remote controllers, high tension electric lines, powerfull magnets(sound systems included), microwave owens, satellite transmission etc. what will you avoid?

so my advise would be to ignore these studies for the time being.

till date no medical textbook has labelled cellular technology radiation (whether gsm, cdma, xdma) as dangerous.

period.

Our very own shrink!!!! :eek:hyeah:

No offense pal...

Nice put btw...

radiation shadiation....marna to kai..ek din....sale acha cell phone leke maro...:bleh:

I think more dangerous than the cellphones are their damn towers. The cellphone companiess have put them up on residential buildings, but they have not conducted any studies to see whether they are safe in such areas.

GOT IT the reason of Headache. Take care in future. :)

do wireless gprs frequencies also effect ???? brain? i use gprs 24/7 :| and vandal lol yea thats true but atleast 60 to ho jane do :O nehi to itni pahele agar jan se hat dho baitha to life ka maza kaise pata chalega:( :( :S .. live long everyone :eek:hyeah:

There was a study on the effects of having an active WiFi network in the house.. Study claimed it retarded the development of the brain in children. IMHO though, a kid in this scenario would be retarded by his genes, considering his parents have an operational WiFi network at home. :p

Its just a stupid Gimmick.

Parents put it into the kids brains so that theyll study.

I for 1 think there is no possible way to find out if it actually causes it.

I doubt it.

Its every mans opinion to himself.

Plus, i hardly use my cellphone :bleh:
