Figuring stuff out
Herald
I wanted to set up my laptop so that i could dial via my mobile phone as modem,to my home phone connected to my desktop pc and establish a dial up conn. for accessing the broadband connection that is present at home. Now i tried a similar setup 2 yrs ago to access my friend's pc , just that we were both dialing each others landlines from our bsnl landlines.......but the mobile phone seems to have a catch........

1. The mobiles are set up as modems in both places
2. The windows xp incoming connections is set up on the desktop.
3. The laptop has a dial up connection to dial to the mobile connected with the desktop.

but when i click dial, the dialing starts, and within seconds, it ends,....... error 678 is shown on the computer and the mobile screen shows "check network services"
what could the problem be? do i have to activate some "data call facility" Before i can use this?

any info would be great !

Ahh...there indeed is a catch...

you will not be able to use the half duplex voice connection over a mobile to transfer data, as unlike a landlike phone, a mobile phone uses a very different method of data transfer for voice communication

(In brief:

- Your voice is converted to a compressed format using a audio codec

- The voice data is encrypted

- Data transferred to MSC (mobile switching center)

- MSC does the decryption and connectes you to the PSTN network)

Which is why GSM phones use a different connection protocol for data communication (GPRS)

Quick question though, why do you want to set up a net connection this way? (Not that you can do it this way anyway)

As in wouldnt it be cheaper to take a GPRS connection than paying per minute for a landline call?
