Hi,
Looking for a phone with the foll features (in the same order of preference. Liked the E50 and 6233 and to some extent even 5500
1. Small and compact (very imp). It should look very very sleek. Last phone used was 8250 (liked it so much that I have been using it since 5 yrs without a single penny spent on it !!)

2. Steel body (at least very sturdy). Should be usable for 3-4 years if not more - i'm not into changing mobiles frequently.

3. Good battery life

4. FM (optional)

5. Camera (optional and only if its good enough)

Also recommend some other phones under 15K if you feel they are better. Somehow heard about sony's battery life not so good as compared to nokia (shopkeeper's opinion though). Also, I am used to Nokia's user interface

Thanks in advance

If 15k is your budget try Nokia N72, the best VFM Phone for 15k. (if solid body is not so much in your cocern), actually if you know how to maintain phone well then any Nokia Phones can go upto 4 ys+. But anyway if you want rough and tough phone then 6233 seems to be the best bet, ignoring the fact that it does'nt has flash and also it's loaded with Series 40 Symbian Software.

E50
PROS:
- Thin form factor
- Bright, Vivid Screen (but fonts are relatively small)
- Quad-band GSM operations, real World-phone in a practical sense
- Series 60 Smartphone packed with business-friendly features / apps like QuickOffice, PDF reader, Setting wizards, Message dictator in many different languages / dialects etc.
- Good battery life
- Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, kinda gimmick for mobile data connection because its as fast as EDGE goes if available but still great for transfer files between devices.

CONS:
- Bad design for the power button on the top, very difficult to "feel" and easy to break the rubber in long run
- Some keys are not very ergonomically placed
- No built-in keyguard (but 3rd party app available for the exact function)
- Fonts are relatively smaller to adapt its screen size and small thin form factor, documents can get really clutter comparing to some other Smartphones
- Has to take off the battery cover for memory card access
- Battery cover needs "break-in" period for easy release, otherwise it needs both hands
- Like all Series 60 Nokia, operations are little lagging
- Voice recorder does not offer good quality audio
- Images / Video captured with the Camera is average quality
- Lack of a "flash light" to assist the camera in low light conditions
- No FM Radio (if you care)

6233
PROS:
- Good form factor and still not too bulky
- Bright, Vivid Screen
- Stereo Loudspeaker, good gimmick for playing music
- Tri-band GSM operations + 3G in 2.1GHz, which is better for mobile data connection if available
- Series 40 3rd Edition packed with reliable, tried and true UI and features
- Memory card access is relatively improved with a fix "door"
- Better support with many 3rd parties apps in JAVA and utility programs to hook up PCs
- Besides good image quality, Good Video capture capability (up to 640x480, but take lots of memory for the big file) as a cellphone
- Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR kinda okay for mobile data connection in 3G if available but great for transfer files between devices

CONS:
- Odd placement of the volume buttons, which are on the opposite side of majority Nokia
- Battery life is not exceptional with a 1000mAh+ battery but it is still better than N80 or 6131, for example
- Bad experience with conversations using hands-free loudspeaker mode, volume is too faint for the party on the line
- Lack of a 2nd camera for Video Call capability found on many 3G handsets
- Lack of a "flash light" to assist the camera in low light conditions
from howardforums
one more diff is 1.3mp cam vs 2mp ... I'd recommend the 6233, unless you want series60 :)

Compare Nokia 6233 and Nokia E50 mobile phones

Series 60 Smartphone packed with business-friendly features / apps like QuickOffice, PDF reader, Setting wizards, Message dictator in many different languages / dialects etc.

apart from these there are lots of apps available for the symbian(Series60) phones, series 40 is a nokia proprietary OS and only supports java apps.

Nokia E50 is definitely your best bet. It comes with the latest version of Symbian (v9.1/S60v3) and packed with applications and business features. Downside is that it doesn't support WiFi, FM, 3G, and doesn't come with a decent camera. Still, for the price, size, features and performance, nothing comes close to E50.

For a change, if you can tolerate a slight increase in weight and a little inferior build quality, N70 cannot be avoided. It runs on S60v2, supports FM and 3G (but no WiFi) and comes with a decent 2MP camera. Internal sound hardware being the same, N70 comes with a stereo headset, while E50 makes do with a mono piece. You can still buy a nice stereo headset and use with E50 for music, though.

If 3G (think video calls in future) and FM are not very important, E50 is for you.

^^ I think that with all the info on e50 and 6233, I have to dump the e50 in favor of 5500. So now the comparison is between 6233 and 5500. Can the mods change the thread title ?

So, you're counting on the "cons" listed for the E50? Let's debunk a few myths: -

- Bad design for the power button on the top, very difficult to "feel" and easy to break the rubber in long run
Hardly a negative point, since most of the current Nokia phones have the same power button design.

- Some keys are not very ergonomically placed
Reviewers say the same for any phone they review. It's a subjective thing.

- No built-in keyguard (but 3rd party app available for the exact function)
No built-in missile launcher either, but you get the point.

- Fonts are relatively smaller to adapt its screen size and small thin form factor, documents can get really clutter comparing to some other Smartphones
Fonts appear a little smaller because of the high resolution and relatively small screen. You wouldn't need a microscope, though.

- Has to take off the battery cover for memory card access
Yeah, like you swap the card a dozen times everyday. It's, in fact, a better design, as it doesn't attact and accumulate dust inside.

Sounds like the reviewer couldn't cope with the zipper and went on to become a nudist.

- Battery cover needs "break-in" period for easy release, otherwise it needs both hands
Bad for physically handicapped, not otherwise. What do we have our two hands for? I'm sure if this phone had a loose cover, the reviewer would've gone ga-ga over the build quality.

- Like all Series 60 Nokia, operations are little lagging
We all know about that. Symbian does lag a little, but the features far outweigh the annoyances.

- Voice recorder does not offer good quality audio
E50 is not a mobile recording studio. I wonder what exactly the reviewer was expecting.

- Images / Video captured with the Camera is average quality
Precisely what it's meant to be. You cannot expect much from a 1.3MP cam.

- Lack of a "flash light" to assist the camera in low light conditions
Wow! It lacks a four wheel drive system too. It also lacks a rotor, a blower, an AC, a 42" plasma display, an M4A1 extra clip and a nice pair of b00bies. It doesn't come with any 007 gadgets either. How silly of the phone designers! At least they should've packaged a "natural manhood enlarger".

Disappointing! Nokia s*cks now!! :@

- No FM Radio (if you care)
No, I don't. But the reviewer was expecting everything including a kitchen-sink.

BTW, 5500 has a lot of problems. You wouldn't want the "Sports" program running in the background all the time, if you weren't a sportsperson. It has a poor battery life, and there've been many cases of keys falling out.

Good intelligent points made and very much appreciated.

Couple of more questions.

1. What do you mean keys falling out. It's a rubber coated keypad with nothing sticking out. How can they fall out (or have i not understood what you mean) ?

2. Cant the sports program be turned off ?

(Almost as an afterthought)

Does this mean that you 'strongly' recommend E50 for someone like me who is not going to use the business features (on the other hand i am not going to use the sports features of 5500 too!)

thanks anyways

1. It's a glue problem. Many 5500 users have reported this on a few forums.
2. AFAIK, no.
3. I recommend E50 because that is what you seem to be in need for. It is a sleek, well built, S60 3rd edition smartphone that meets your requirements. As I've said before, if 3G and FM are important, you may even go for N70.

You should read a few reviews and form your own opinion. All Nokia phones has useful user comments and feature specs listed for convenience.

Dont forget to remove the plastic cover on screen, it deteroites the brightness a bit and makes it look blunt :P

if dust concern then dont though.

13K - Nokia seal packed - Bill + Warranty. Bought from a local shop in Lower Parel (next to the station). Went to Big Bazaar but they were charging 13,275 and didnt have the pieces in stock.

According to the shopkeeper, lots of shops in Heera Panna are offering it for 11K with bill and warranty, but Nokia Service Centre are not recognizing the same as an original warranty !!! I saw a case myself when i went to buy my cell. It seems (and i have read it in the Nokia ad in the TOI too) that only boxes imported by Nokia India Pvt. Ltd would be considered genuine e.g. if its imported by Ahuja and Sons, Delhi its not original and Nokia service centre will NOT provide any warranty on the same
