About a month ago, Nokia had launched a survey (along side Microsoft) wanting to know which features users wanted most with the upcoming Windows Phone 7.8 update. It seems that both parties are indeed putting the effort into the OS update, as they should be doing (poor Lumia 900 owners). We are already aware of a previously leaked slide that Nokia plans to (and of course, Microsoft in collaboration) update WP7 further even after the Windows Phone 7.8. This is great news for current WP7 users. This is a good step in the right direction, especially when we know that the cheapest WP8 device will cost $250 (Nokia Lumia 620) and it is unlikely that there will be a cheaper WP8 handset anytime soon, leaving the entire $100-$200 unlocked and developing markets untapped. That is exactly where WP7 will remain alive and kicking.
Windows Phone 7.8 features from Microsoft

Microsoft will be bringing a slew of new features with their Windows Phone 7.8 update. This includes the *most wanted* new home screen with more, re-sizable tiles. A list of new features include:
  • New homescreen experience with more room for your Live Tiles, now re-sizable
  • Set the Bing image of the day as the Lock Screen wallpaper
  • Pocket and child Lock screen Security
  • 20 new accent theme colours

Well. The single most exciting feature is the new home screen, and current WP7 users simply can't wait to start using it.
Windows Phone 7.8 features from Nokia

Nokia will also be adding many interesting features to Windows Phone 7.8 from their own side. These include:

  • Bluetooth Share (for DRM free media files)
  • Cinemagraph add-on to create blend and photo and movie-like animation, creating photos that are alive
  • New camera lenses to remove unwanted objects in your photos such as passers-by or people on the edge of the shot the spoil the photo
  • Updated Contacts Transfer & Contacts Share application
  • Ringtone Maker application

The Leaked Image

The single most exciting feature from Nokia's side is Bluetooth transfer. At long last, the much needed (and should be included) Bluetooth file sharing feature is enabled. This will come as a respite for many who were apprehensive of buying a Windows Phone. It's sad that they are not addressing one more (and key) critical feature, i.e. expandable storage. Perhaps in a future update, now that there is a possibility of a Windows Phone 7.9 in the cards!
