Nokia's new president of Nokia U.S, Chris Weber, has said that Nokia will stop making low end featurephones or dumbphones for the US and Canadian market because Nokia has completely overtaken the smartphone market and they couldn't care less for people who cant afford to buy smartphones.

“When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc., †Nokia Inc. President Chris Weber said in an interview with AllThingsD. “It will be Windows Phone and the accessories around that. The reality is if we are not successful with Windows Phone, it doesn’t matter what we do (elsewhere).â€

Nokia to Exit Symbian, Low-End Phone Businesses in North America - Ina Fried - Mobile - AllThingsD

they are forgetting who they were, it is due to theses dumbphones that they had presence all over the world and now apple and android have overtaken Nokia and not the otherway around.

Will they continue making dump phones for us here?Me thinks they are still the best in the phone business.

Nokia never had a good market share in the US anyways. I don't care what they do there. I just hope they continue to make good phones here. :P

they have completely skipped android so now they need a pull-up some where

hope they launch VFM Window phones in INDIA ... thats what i am concern

They were actually quite popular with prepaid connection here in the past. But now with smartphones getting unlocked and used with prepaid connection. Even with cheaper smartphones, many people abandoned the nokia dumb phones. Even today in US there are lot of people using Iphones, Android and whatnot with prepaid just like in India.

Also I think they dumped symbian because they do not have contract exclusivity with any carriers. It seems the big 4 (ATT, T-Mo, Sprint, Verizon) is not that keen on having Nokia phones on their contract list since they are undersold. Nobody would buy a Nokia symbian phone on a 2 year contract. Maybe they will with Windows but not with Symbian.

My question is why did they not bring N9. It was actually gaining popularity and interest around the world. So it would have been popular. But oh well.

Lets face it. If nokia chose Android, they would a fish in a big pond. With so many android devices coming out, they will not be able to differentiate themselves. Windows is a new OS and currently only three manufacturers are there - Sammy, HTC and LG. So Nokia can make a difference. Also Windows need Nokia to back them so it might beneficial to both Nokia and Windows. Also with Windows giving freedom to Nokia, they can continue to innovate and coexist.

Here is what Nokia Philippines’s Corporate Communications Manager Ms. Nikka Abes said regarding the collaboration with Windows:

"Nokia explored a number of options for building a new ecosystem. It became clear that we could not catalyze an ecosystem around our own assets. The Android ecosystem has many positive qualities but we believe our ability to differentiate and maintain margins within that ecosystem would have been limited. We believe a partnership with Microsoft had the best potential for sustainable differentiation, a central role in a new ecosystem and the opportunity to create the third ecosystem providing more choice for operators and consumers. Together, Nokia and Microsoft plan to bring a combined services portfolio covering location, search, entertainment, social, advertising and commerce, with a fantastic opportunity to create new experiences through the integration and combination of core services assets"

Here's your answer :

^first rule of engineering viva :bleh:

Just saw preview of Nokia Windows in Youtube, don't know how much it is real, but design is quite good.

sorry to say that they have had such a long journey & such a way behind, the time has come for them to think from consumers point of view rather than Stephen Elop's way.

^^ Have you used MeeGo ? Why do you think it can succeed ? I'm using it right now and love but i know that one device does not an ecosystem make. Shit market value and piss poor sales later , Nokia does not have an option to do experiments here.

MeeGo is not being abandoned , you'll see all that N9 stuff in some form or the other within the next few years. And regarding Android , i'm not really sure i agree with you at that. Ask the WP7 users here , the OS is absolutely a joy to use.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion but keep an open mind , there is a lot of content out there written just with site hits in mind, remember that dissing Nokia is cool these days ;)

^^i have used WP7 and dont think it has universal appeal and the WP7 sales till now are a good indicator of normal people's preference, the tile ui is a big turn off and only a minority like the ui and the rest will go with android due to customization options and openness and those who prefer a closed platform will go with ios, recently even Samsung's Bada OS surpassed WP7 marketshare:

i havent used meego+swipe ui but it looks much better and different than other OS's, whether N9/meego will succeed or not should have been decided by the market not the trojan horse(Elop), nokia's poor market value and sales are due to Elop and his silly announcements.

i know many people are writing many things on nokia but just read the above articles(nokia matrix and Elop effect) again and you will find that most of the things mentioned are true and nobody can deny that :)

It felt as though it was Steve Ballmer speaking :ohyeah: or Microsoft speaking through the mouth of Nokia as other users on other forums put it ;)

It sounds so ignorant of market reality! Typical Microsoft talk :D

Elop also answered a question about his Microsoft shares, saying that he sold some as soon as he was allowed to but stopped selling prior to the announcement of the Nokia-Microsoft deal, as required by law. He also denied being seventh-largest individual Microsoft shareholder as some statistics show -- he was at the company for less than two years, and holds about 130,000 shares worth about $3.18 million, according to Daily Finance. By way of comparison, top shareholder Bill Gates has 583 million shares worth $16.06 billion.

Conspiracy theorists received additional ammunition Friday, when Nokia announced Chris Weber as its new president of Nokia Inc. (US) and head of the North American market after current president, Mark Louison, "decided to leave Nokia and pursue new career opportunities." Weber spent 16 years at Microsoft, where he held executive positions as high as corporate vice president.

So, basically, the CEO and now the President of Nokia are both Ex-Microsoft employees who still hold large number of shares in Microsoft. Am I the only one smelling something cooking here?

While solid details of the agreement between the two companies have not been released, news surfaced over the weekend that sheds light on just how big the deal is. According to Computer World, while showing a slide that portrayed Microsoft's investments flowing in Nokia's direction, Elop said, "the value transferred to Nokia is measured in Bs not Ms." Meaning, Microsoft pay-out to Nokia in the deal would be in the billions, not millions, of dollars.

^^ Elop has already sold the shares. He does not hold any MS stock.

Oh well.. who cares, buy whatever you like. After having using about 10-15 different Android devices , WP7 has just been a breath of fresh air for me hence why i support it. Couldn't be bothered by customization.

I also support and have an open mind about WP7. While being an die hard Android fan, WP7 does give me that different look. I personally like the Metro tiles and the software gives an excellent user experience. My dad is currently using HD7 and likes it. He actually thinks that my android handsets are slower compared to his HD7 despite having inferior processor in HD7. Also with the mango update and given features included in it, WP7 will start to move in the right direction.

Also lets not forget that Windows will be releasing Tango to feature in Low end phones. Currently which company has the best dumb phones in the market? Nokia. Even in India, which is more popular? Not Samsung, Sony, HTC. Only Nokia, then the rest. Yes, market is getting flooded with new products, but it is Nokia that has recognition here in India and other countries in Asia. With this I believe Windows has a chance to increase their market share. With Tango and low end budget phones, they can conquer different kind of markets. So judging them now is wrong as they have not yet taken any major steps. So lets wait till next year or after all this take into effect to judge them both.

Reason why Nokia chose Windows:

Nokia rejected by RIM before going to Microsoft for a hug : MobileAttack.com

"Nokia first went to RIM for a possible partnership before going to Microsoft. We had all heard that Nokia was also considering going to Android OS as well as WP7, but RIM was also considered to be the main OS for Nokia devices going forward.

Other contributing factors to the final decision to go with Microsoft were reported as well, including Google’s decision to reject Nokia as the result of Nokia wanting to change the way Android uses Google maps, as well as how it utilizes PIM data. Rejection! Apparently, Microsoft is easy. I guess this would explain why Elop is targeting Android in mobile war…he’s hurt"

Now honestly I love Nokia's GPS implementation. More so than Google maps and this would have been a excellent marriage. But, oh well we cannot have everything.

The reason for down sales: People are waiting to see what Nokia's Windows Phone 7 phones are going to be like. Honestly, people are not going to buy Nokia phones with an OS that Nokia isn't taking serious anymore or phasing out. Even if they say they're going to support it still for a while yet but they're main OS is going to be WP7. After releasing WP7 phone if Nokia still loses market share then we can say things about Nokia. But now it is just a little too early to judge.

"Since Apple, Google, Microsoft already have huge computing ecosystems e.g. iTunes, Windows Live, GMail e.t.c. Whatever Nokia tries to do to replicate their services just won't be the same because they don't have an already established leading edge computing ecosystem. By taking up WP7, Nokia saves a lot of development and maintenance resources which they can use to focus on better hardware and marketing"

I still agree that Nokia destroyed its own customer base by not getting along with changes happening in the market few years ago. Atleast now, they are taking right step towards brighter future.
