Normal mobile sim for 3g dongle use is not ok ?

I have a new Huawei E303FH dongle and I just popped in a spare Airtel sim that I had lying around.
Can't I recharge the same for 3g and use it ?
Or it doesn't work that way ? Cause it's only showing 2g as of now.
Pardon my ignorance, I haven't ever used a 3g dongle before.

2. First u have to activate the 3g on the sim if it is not. To activate write "3G"(without qoute) and send it to 121.

But if you could, tell me one thing, what happens to the 252/- recharge I made on it in the morning ? Right now, I was asked to select one of the recharge options again.
So, the one done prior to activating 3g on the sim, goes waste ? Or will that get topped off ?

Dial *123*11# and check the balance. I think the pack is activated.
BTW don't u get the message after recharge?

Thanks again. It works. I do get the message after recharge, but the one I did initially before activating 3g isn't showing somehow.
And lastly, how do I check data balance and data plan ?
