Can all the existing contents (partitions, operating system + softwares & settings) on my current hard drive be transferred to my new lappy using Norton Ghost? I do not want to go through the painful re-install process again...

acronis true image 2009 does this witout a problem. norton ghost received poor reviews because their images cannot be restored sometimes.

Thanks. So all i need to do is to take the full system backup and then re-install / restore the image in my new hdd? i mean there is no existing os in the new lappy as of now, although i have got the xp install cd.

I believe you can only do that if the hardware is similar. I don't think you can just take an image from one system and put it on to a completely different system because the drivers will probably be different. The same is true regardless of whether you use Ghost or True Image.

Anyway wait for a response from someone who has actually tried this.

@Emil
Completely agree with you.

There will be lots of driver errors especially if the h/w is different. You'll spend
more time removing/fixing the drivers than doing a clean install.
Regards

For making Norton Ghost image i think you need similar hardware as drivers are always different for different hardware,. You might face problem using desktop image to laptop. So i would suggest you to take pain one more time do the clean installation on laptop and make its image for future use.

Yeah, I assume you will always be a driver issue here, so better yuo go for a clean new OS installation, and morever nowerdays its takes just 20 to 30 minutes to install window, and another 20 mins for other softwares (if you have arranged them well),.

After that you can very well take a backup...for future references...

No they can't be done selectively.
Even if you don't have the software CD anymore, you must at least have the serial number. If that is so then no big deal. Just download the software and activate with the old serial number. Most software will be activated that way if it is the same edition. You may have to get help from the CS of some of them to allow you to re-activate using the same serial number again.

and what about acronis's universal restore option?

doesn't it restore image file to any machine regardless of hardware configs?

and 1 option could be you just remove all the drivers from ur old windows pc and then make the image and restore it to new machine.

if it still doesn't work repair the installation.

and what is sysprep?

sysprep is program to make system ready for another hardware.

Which os u are having? If its xp i can help u out. Unaware of possibilities for vista, win 7 etc.

My os is windows xp professional. If acronis has the option of installing the programs then it will be good news for me. i dont have the serials of the programs either. i was under the impression that these softwares (acronis, ghost etc.) are able to backup & install the programs at least, without any hassles. looks like i was wrong all the way...:'(

Kiran, since you have used acronis (i assume after reading ur reply), does it have an option to clone programs into another hdd without the need to re-install them again?? u must have gone through my post...
