Hi there guys, I am using a very old Pentium 4 machine and it has a Samsung DVD writer. I bought several CD - RW of Sony and a few DVD - RW. None of them is working properly, whenever I try to burn them using Nero it says "burning failed". I just have one DVD + RW and only that is working fine. When I put the CD's and DVD's in my DVD writer and try opening using my computer I get the message, "Not accessible, Incorrect function". Can you guys tell me what should I do?

Is it only RW that you arent able to write?
Have to tried a regular CD R or DVD R?
If you arent able to write CD or DVD R then I think you drive has gone kaput.

Dont waste you cds trying to burn them, just get a new drive.

I also think the same, there is a great chance that my optical drive is not functioning well. But then how come one of my DVD + RW was successfully burned?

@sam9953 When my Sony drive was going bad, i too encountered similar errors. I recall out of around 10 DVDs I was able to burn only one was successfully burned.
I thought it might be a bad batch of National DVDs so got a Sony DVD and it failed to.
Also the reading times were very very very long some where around 5 ~ 10 min.

Yaa similar with me, the reading time is sometimes more than 10 minutes for me. So maybe it is just my optical drive then. BTW what is the difference between DVD - RW and DVD + RW?

Here Sam this should help -- Range of media available and the omnipotent wiki pages -- DVD-RW and DVD+RW. Cheerio!!

Pioneer, who, in accordance with DVD Forum (the entity which controls the DVD name and technical aspects), developed the DVD-RW.

On the other hand, there is DVD+RW Alliance, where, among others, we find HP, Philips, Ricoh, Sony, Thomson and Yamaha. They officially claim to have developed a new format because the DVD-RW cannot handle video recording very easily.

DVD-RW technology is very similar to that of the CD-RW. For DVD+RW, the Alliance wanted to make video recording easier, especially for home use. So they implemented a technology called Lossless Linking. In DVD+RW video format, a video can be encoded in VBR (variable bit rate). The process of writing at a constant rate takes up a lot of room, so it has to be stopped and started again. This is likely to cause link loss, which makes the disk incompatible with read-only devices like DVD video players. With DVD+RW, the process can be stopped and started again without any link loss. This characteristic makes the format efficient and suitable for random data writing and video applications. With lossless linking, it is also possible to replace any individual block of 32 kB (write unit) with another, without losing compatibility.
