I just installed Windows 98 on my very old machine but i am not able to get the display resolution of more than 640x480 and 16 colours. I have lost the driver CDs of the computer and not able to find drivers on the net also. My monitor is viewsonic E40-3 and i installed drivers for the same, still i am not getting better resolution.
I think i need motherboard drivers. So in order to detect what mb and chipset i have i ran the intel chipset identification utility and it gave the result as

Intel 440 Chipset Family
Memory Controller - 82440LX
I/O Controller - 8231EB (PIIX4E)
Integrated Graphics - Not detected or disabled

Then i ran the utility CPU-Z and found the following under mainboard tab

Model - i440LX - ALi5135
Chipset - i440LX Rev 03

How am i supposed to know what to query, download and where to lookout for the appropriate drivers ??

There is a application called Belarc Advisor.

Download it from here: Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit

It will tell you, your motherboard chipset along with VGA, LAN etc. If you can't find it yourself, just save the html file and attach it here and I will tell you where can you download the drivers from. Though, Win 98 drivers are difficult to find.
