I have connected WD Passport & I am not getting USB 3.0 speeds. Speed is same in both USB 2.0 & USB 3.0 ports :

Fisrt I connected the drive & let it install the drivers. Speed was low & so I imported drivers which they came with & speed is still same.

I already have installed USB 3.0 drivers of port long ago.

What to do ?

You probably need to have a SSD to get that kind of speeds, because a normal hdd has low write/read speed.

^hmm okay, but how come both USB 2 & USB 3.0 ports are giving same speed ?

If I had known this earlier then I wouldn't have gone for USB 3.0 :(

What ? :O

I had no idea about this at all !

The specs says 500MB/s :S

Here - Flipkart.com: WD My Passport Essential SE 2.5 inch 1 TB: External Hard Drive

The specs Does not SAY 500Mb/s its says 5GB/s thats actually a mistake, its not your HDD's read/write speed, its the interface speed (in this care usb 3.0) also 70mb/s is a quite good speed if its average speed and not just a burst speed.

No HDD (non RAID) can go beyond a speed of 150 - 200mb/s (7200rpm) yours would be still a 5400rpm one inside the external case. USB 3.0 is best to use with a USB 3.0 pen drive in which you would get speed of 300-400mb/s but HDDs are too slow to read/write data at that speed....

There is no need to buy a external HDD with usb 3.0 interface (unless its raid internally) you should have seen some reviews on the internet before buying... tho USB 3.0 would give little advantage over USB 2.0 but no much with a Harddisk.

If you are getting 71 MBps, its quite good for a laptop HDD.

500 MBps is the max! To saturate the bandwidth of the USB3.0 port, you will need an SSD at the very least.
