Samsung has announced it's ending production of the Galaxy Note 7 around the world, pulling the plug on the phone after a months-long controversy over its defective, dangerous batteries. "Taking our customer’s safety as our highest priority, we have decided to halt sales and production of the Galaxy Note 7," said Samsung in a statement. The announcement follows yesterday's news that the company is recalling all Note 7 devices, including the supposedly safe replacement phones.

Samsung issued the worldwide recall yesterday after at at least five replacement Note 7 handsets caught fire over the past week. "Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7," said the company yesterday. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission commended the decision, with chairman Elliot Kaye saying: "It is the right move for Samsung to suspend the sale and exchange of all Galaxy Note 7s."

Consumers using any Note 7 (including replacement units) are urged to power them down immediately and return them to wherever they were originally purchased. Carriers have issued statements letting customers know that replacement Note 7s can be exchanged for another handset from Samsung or other manufacturers.

The Note 7 was originally released in August to highly positive reviews, but before the month was out, the first reports of the phone's battery catching fire began to emerge. Samsung issued a recall of the original device on September 2nd and that same month began shipping out replacement Note 7s to carriers. However, these too have proved to be a fire risk, leading to the company's expected — but still momentous — decision to cease production altogether.

I wonder if there is some design flaw involved in Note 7 that's resulting in the battery getting ruptured.

Lithium batteries exploding is nothing uncommon and in fact, despite Apple's ability to suppress negative news, there are at least 2~3 instances of iPhone's exploding in last one month and severe enough to cause to third degree burns. Even iPhone 7 which is barely released has already got a case of going up in fire.

There are also numerous cases where bad batch of batteries resulted in the ratio of explosions increasing and resulting in recalls, but the situation with Note 7 seems unprecedented. Surely, there is some reasoning for the high rate of battery issues.

Sad, was looking to buy one. Thought it was a very mature and rounded product in every sense design, specs, software and s pen. Hope they make a worthy replacement. Looks like a pr nightmare for Samsung.

so will we get some really great deals on new or used note 7 in india ? 10-20 exploding outta millions does not seem that bad.

How will there be deals on new ones when they've halted production completely and will probably recall every Note 7 in the market to avoid further incidents and lawsuits ?
Why would someone keep a faulty phone or sell theirs at a loss when Samsung will fully compensate ?
Think before commenting m8.

10-20 exploding outta millions does not seem that bad.

It isn't bad until it's your thigh that receives third degree burns.

heard same thing happened for multiple iphone 6s and even barely some iphone 7 gave 3rd degree burns as well...i think it is just a case of being able to suppress the news better coz fortunately you belong to the main country (barely THE country now)...

as everyone said...its a damage control situation...maybe 20 iphones explode vs 25 note 7 who knows? it is just a case of the news blowing up for sure...but samsung definitely messed up big time..did someone not think of a conspiracy?? After having one of the greatest years for samsung mobile and a low for iphone company...isnt the timing just so convinient? in swoops a news artile or media trick that ruins samsung...for sure just like the opposition were doing in election...and the side against trump most probably were able to find/fabricate/dig/who knows ...rallied the media and ruined him (i am against him so good for me there :p ),,similarly i am sure there is no innocent party here and there is a lots of things behind the scenes

I love fanboys like you. Living in constant denial.

^^ Apple is definitely good at damage control. At the very least, they seem to have fair control over tech blogs and tech specific media channels. Most of the iPhone explosion/fire incidents reported recently are coming to the surface though non tech media and only later being picked up by the usual tech blogs if at all in order to maintain credibility. It is also likely that only a small fraction of their cases ever get into the limelight.

Samsung on the other hand is pretty poor with PR management.

We are not talking about ANY NEW DEVICE here we are talking about Note 7.

Read your post again as per your post it sounded u want to say every new device is same it's just the model number/name which different.
Note 8 will be Note 8, simple

It will not be a new name of Note 7

Your logic didn't make any sense

The cost is about 1~1.5 billion tops which is peanuts compared to what Samsung could stand to lose if they tried to resell the Note 7 with a re-label. FYI, Despite the Note 7 fiasco, Samsung Q3 profits have actually increased by 17%. They would much rather go ahead and release a revamped Note 8 in a couple of months

U really assume things in life right?

They haven't seemed to have figured out what's causing the problems since the replacements have been reported to have gone up in smoke as well.
Sure they can ditch the outer body and try to make use of other components like the camera, the SD820 and memory but doing that for millions of devices isn't really feasible.
At this point of time no one is really sure and they have already written off $17 Billion over this fiasco but you're assuming a lot yourself.
