Hi , I have a dell studio xps 16 notebook . it is quite good notebook . but with time it is sure it will get older and slow .

i know we could just increase memory and hard disk but that is not gonna get more performance . i was wondering if we could change the gfx card ?

which slot the notebooks primeriy use for gfx card .

and btw can we give the notebook to dell and tell them to change gfx card ?

 please clear my doubts

The graphics card is either integrated onto the motherboard or is soldered onto the motherboard. It cannot be changed.

To get a better graphics card, you have to buy a new laptop.

no chance u cant do this and its still time better sell and buy better future proof one if u think this one is not worth

@both posts above mine.

WRONG.

Its NOT impossible. As long as the card is on a MXM slot, it can be swapped out for something better

well if ur going that deep in details then it will be hard to arrange that card first of all cos most laptop comp have tie-up with their vendor and they dont sell out to others as retail and second thing no one know what will be the impact on mobo and other compatiblitly. again you need to be brave to play with 70k notebook

Nonsense.. As long as your card is in the MXM format, you can find replacements http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

its just not as popular as swapping out PC components coz not too many folks know/care whether it can be done.

yes and with laptops mostly people care abt warrenty and playing with 70k stuff is not easy for all. may be u can do it cos ur brave and have money tree

common it should be easy as 1-2-3 , PC components can be built by a 15yo so why not notebook .

and btw does it cover in warrenty ? is MXM user replaceable like HDD and RAM in notebook ?

also one more thing , does dell even have MXM slot or is prepitory slot ? i am really worried .

Stalker is definitely on the right path. However, doing a graphics swap isn't an easy job based on my experience of doing the same last week.

An easier way out is to replace the entire motherboard. I'm guessing you have a Radeon HD3670? Try and find a motherboard with a better GPU than the 3670, so that you can try and do a straight swap without any of the unnecessary soldering and heating jobs.

P.S.: If you really wanted a gaming laptop, you should've bought a Clevo/Sager/Alienware. Dell XPSes are more suited toward the mid-range gamer.

true idea and its easy and safe cost will be aprox 10k+

^^ Huh?? Look at this way, that laptop's probably going to be worth zilch in about an year. Should the OP spend another 50+K for a decent gaming laptop when a mobo can be had for much less?

Perhaps you're the rich guy around here. Can I get a free laptop too?

haha well said man lol

First of all MXM is supported mostly(only) by custom laptop manufacturers like Clevo(Resellers Sager, Alienware! etc.)

DELL is known to make their own custom modules specific to the notebooks manufactured by them.

Dell uses a proprietary 'Dell' slot for replaceable GPUs. Modules for which are manufactured and sold by dell itself.

So, ur only chance to upgrade is if dell itself offers upgrade for ur laptop's GPU! :D

Heatsink design is also an issue! if suppose u find a gpu matching urs, it might be impossible to swap it in cuz of the different heatsink design/ minor design differences etc.

My Sager supports MXM-IV slot! for which i can buy GPUs directly from Clevo or sager! :D

I Should clear 1 thing i already have dell studio xps 16 with standerd configuration . i wont mind paying few extra bucks if they replace the gfx card if i send them the card .

And all must be aware of the fact that how much powerful gpu i buy today , it will be slower and wont run contemperory games after 1 year . and the prices are falling always .

while configuring my dell there was only 2 options for selecting videocard they were for 3670 256 mb and 2670 512 mb , i took more memory version for obvious reasons .

i dont want hole in my pocket by buying alienware after all techonology wont last longer.

PS: Gaming is secondry concern in my notebook . notebook is for CAD/Photoshop work mainly .

You mean not so obvious reasons :P

Firstly, there is nothing called a 2670. Secondly, Memory on the graphics card is of secondary importance. What matters is the actual chip, not the amount of memory it has.

sorry it was typo it is actually 3670 in 256 and 512 version .

so whichever is bettter among this i choose
