I have seen Notion Ink being mentioned on the forum before, but I didn't find any dedicated thread nor sure how many people know about their tablet Adam, so creating this thread.

Notion Ink Adam Tablet Caught On Video, Specs Finalized - ADAM - Gizmodo

This thing is nothing revolutionary and rather just a new twist on the already existing tablet industry just like the iPad, but it looks rather impressive from the specs and hands on videos.

Obivously a lot of folk have been talking about it and comparing it to the iPad. But unlike the iPad which can be seen as nothing more than a oversized iPod Touch or a heavily crippled iPhone, this thing offers a bit more power with Tegra 2 and a lot more functionality and more importantly flexibility.

iPad was a bad choice of a device for most of the things that were mentioned as its strengths like reading eBooks on a 10 hour battery life with the screen not even visible properly in day light, video playback on limited storage and web browsing without Flash support and so I think a lot of people bought it more for novelty than for usability.

This thing on the other hand has a 16+ Hour battery life for HD video and an expandable storage and that alone makes it a great video playback device. For those who want to read eBooks, it also has 140 Hour+ battery life when the back light is switched off and the text is visible even under a good amount of sun light. On the software side, this thing runs andriod and it looks like its possible to run Ubuntu as well. Other things include USB ports and HDMI output. Prices are expected to start from $325

So far there are only a couple of things that I didn't like much about it. The first one is the 10" screen. I think a 7 or 8" screen is more appropriate on such a device. Secondly this is a capacitive device like iPad which means usability of a stylus is pretty limited which is kind of bad when we are talking about a Tablet.

So how many people think that this is of some use and how many are going to buy this thing and what do you think is a sweet spot for the price. Does anyone think that this can replace a Net book?

I am actually waiting for this and a couple of other "ebook readers" to be released this year to decide and buy one. Notion ink is high on my list, but I just hope it is priced right and released in India simultaneously with US release. Around 20K INR should be a sweet price.

Dual Display

A full color :LCD transmissive mode; a low-power, sunlight-readable, reflective e-paper mode; and a transflective mode, which makes the LCD display visible in sunlight, all in One! Proprietary Algorithms for automatic brightness control.

this is one of the main selling points of adam and is pretty cool concept. will have to see how it performs though.

^ Exactly, I was very impressed when they showcased the device but a prototype, even though a fantastic working model, is still a prototype. I'm waiting with my fingers crossed that it lives upto the expectations. Going to be on my immediate-purchase list for sure.

I gave up after Courier and Slate got cancelled. Don't have the patience to wait for this anymore. I ordered the HP tm2 tablet PC yesterday. 12.1inch screen (multitouch enabled and WACOM digitiser support. Can take notes with stylus and onenote), built in keyboard, WWAN, etc. If anyone else is looking, it's a nice option as well. They claim 9 hours battery life with the on-board GPU, lets see what the real world performance is. Have to wait for a week for it to be built though. :(

Could you please post more details about the cost and availability of this tablet.

Notion Ink Adam caught my at the CES 2010. Since then I have been waiting for it just like most if us.

Only drawback I see to it is that this is a startup company launching a new product and throwing in a few new and revolutionary concepts. I just hope they live up to the hype and deliver.

If the higher end models are anywhere near $500 then I am game for it.

The base model is available for about 800$ on ebay.com US.

Windows 7

Intel CULV SU4100 processor.

Intel 4500MHD

4 GB Ram

320GB 7200 RPM HDD

12.1 inch multitouch screen with pressure sensitive stylus support

Wireless b/g/n, webcam

(5-in-1 card reader, VGA, HDMI, 3 USB, RJ45)

I found a coupon and was able to order directly off HP website.

I upgraded to this for a total cost of ~1000$. For me, this is basically a net book replacement. I was hoping for the iPad to be more powerful with a few more features, but it wasn't what I needed.

Windows 7

Intel CULV SU7300 processor.

ATI 4550 (switchable graphics)

4 GB Ram

500GB 7200 RPM HDD

WWAN (SIM card) + GPS

12.1 inch multitouch screen with pressure sensitive stylus support

Wireless b/g/n, webcam, fingerprint reader

(5-in-1 card reader, VGA, HDMI, 3 USB, RJ45)

^^ The config looks too good to be available in $1000, I will be waiting with baited breath for your assessment and a possible review of this .

Thanks

If I am right, the marketing effort would be backed by nVidia as well considering this is a Tegra 2 device and has got a decent amount of attention. Although a start up its backed by IIT graduates and I have seen other start ups from IIT graduates get considerable business. So this might click as well.

I sure hope so! I would love to see a new startup
company with a wildcard product on the market doing well. Especially if they give competition to the guys at Cupertino.

^^ I don't think this would end up being vaporware. Companies like MS and HP have enough resources to afford creating concept devices and later canceling the products at at whim. This is a start up company and they are putting their investments and betting on this sole product to succeed. I don't think they would just drop it suddenly. It would get released, but the main question how the market reacts to it. Further, I don't think nVidia would be stupid enough to let a promising device based on their technology to go to waste especially considering how eagerly nvidia is trying to penetrate the mobile computing market. Then there are also the telecom companies.
