Hi guys,

One of my dearest friends residing in Pune just suffered a big robbery.

2 locks were broken and the thief made away with a digital camera and a 1 month old Dell XPS laptop.

He resides near Aundh area in Pune.

His only suspect (possible) is some painting guys who had a good view into his room because he didnt have any curtains.

This happened just yesterday.

What is the first thing he should to do to ensure any chance of recovery of the laptop?

He:
- doesnt have loss insurance for laptop.
- saved for a while to buy his dream Laptop.

He is totally heartbroken and I want to help him in any way possible.

Yes, he has started the police process.

Regards,
Karan

if he have contact police.. then he will surely get his laptop back. the chances are 99%. also make sure he has not purchased that laptop in grey. if the bill is there, he has some proof of owing it. Also contact CBI as they are very helpful in finding expensive stolen stuffs. BTW how much that laptop cost for him and digi cam?? i hope he gets his stuffs back. While theft only these 2 stuffs were gone?? maybe some tech freak person broke in and took valuables.. but he have to do finding process as soon as possible as to avoid situations like thief selling his laptop/digicam.

dude ......r u serious....... CBI.doesnt take complaints directly.....
if u r joking common yar ....his dream stuff is lost.........

ne ways @ karan ..hope he gets his stuff back.... but..... don keep hopes high....yaar.....electronic items gets sold in gray very fast..

but still hope fr the best

OMG !! Really really sad....

But see the good part...it was "only" money..... nothing happened to him or the people staying with him.....

listen. my uncle's 2lac ruppes were stolen from his car after my uncle was slappped by thiefs and he felt unconcious (long story)... and he contacted CBI. recovered all the money from the thiefs (after 1 month) and he had to give some % of money to CBI. but thats worth cause he got his money back and the thiefs n jail! (this incedent came i news papers,Gujarati news paper)
so if its really expensive laptop above 50k.. CBI might help. thats why i asked for the price of that laptop.

I think all in all the damage was approximately 90k.

Yea he has bill any everything. It was purchased from Dell INDIA site approx 1 month back.

:O... Thats bad... But he should lodge a FIR with the police. Let them follow it up.. But for electronic goods he can only hope to get them back.. As hummer said they get sold pretty fast in grey market...

OT There are some insurance schemes available for lappys but they have high premium. /OT

dude if it is 90k then u should contact CBI if police doesnt respond!! and see the main point is that laptop is just 1 month old. if it was 1 year old then CBI wouldnt handle any such case. im serious.

see post no#5. they handled my uncles case which was small though. 2 lacs is nothing :bleh: CBI rather contact tax department to catch my uncle from where the money came from lol :bleh: if police dont help.. then go for CBI as the laptop is damn new and arnd 90k.

Sorry to hear your friend's misfortune. But I don't think CBI can help here. CBI being a central agency usually investigates these matters -

  1. Cases which are essentially against Central Govt. employees or concerning affairs of the Central Govt.
  2. Cases in which the financial interests of the Central Government are involved.
  3. Cases relating to the breaches of Central Laws with the enforcement of which the Government of India is mainly concerned.
  4. Big cases of fraud, cheating, embezzlement and the like relating to companies in which large funds are involved and similar other cases when committed by organised gangs or professional criminals having ramifications in several States.
  5. Cases having interstate and international ramifications and involving several official agencies where, from all angles, it is considered necessary that a single investigating agency should be incharge of the investigation.

Now, if CBI personnel have started taking side jobs for pocket money, then maybe :S ... But then I feel the local police will be of a greater help if you're willing to work out a commission . They usually have a pretty good idea of local theives. And nothing like a good 'ol jack if your friend can manage that.

@ nvbeast dude .....i donno about ur uncle s case...but i m quite sure that CBI only takes on govt.'s directive or the courts directive...........btw...it mite b worth a shot..

^^ i am not sure but it may be possible to track the laptop if someone tried to surf online using the same, because every genuine win xp pro system has a product ID, so is it @ all possible to get to the buyer of the laptop as & when he uses it to access the net and then, with some luck, maybe to track down the thieves ?? (Although they may format the HDD altogether before selling it, but then they'd have to be hi-tech thieves which is not so likely..)

i wish everyone had Sand of times-Dagger so that they can go back to time and bash the thieves whenever they come at ur place. :bleh:
keep on updating about what police says and r they able to track thiefs?
Good Luck for ur friend.

Karan a few years ago my house was robbed......it was a big loss, its been around 7 years maybe. All i can say is i doubt the police will do anything to help.

I also have reasons to belive they themselves were involved or got a cut out of our robbery.

as far as cbi is concerned they only do govt jobs...i guess your uncle mayb some big minitser...or mayb it was cid and its your typo.....cbi on first place take action only on govt servants........even if they catch robber they will hear frm court.....

frm past some time i too am thinking..why dont company come up with rfid on on xpensive gadgets.......atlest we can track it via gps i guess........i know there has been alot sayin intrusion of privacy..but first start it atlest than intrusion stuff will come up.....

and karan dude...if your frnd is sure who took it...than its better he ctct police and tell them to get it frm the guy....he will try to sell the stuff in market..so its better he lays his hand on him...and ya this police r bS....commission goes like this if u get the stuff well giv u say 10% of wht we got.......dont pay them b4 u get the stuff........

We lost goods worth a Lakh many years back...After lot of investigations police gave us the option of choosing some other unclaimed stolen goods if we pay them some money...We declined to touch others goods though...

Also tell your friend to contact Dell and have the Laptops records updated as stolen. He would need to give either the express service code, service tag or order number in order to do that. This way if anybody else calls in regarding the laptop Dell would already have it on records.
