It is just an excuse. Xiaomi still sells better sourced panels as a budget brand and TCL, Hisense at least produce their own panels, and do a good job of it globally.

OnePlus and Realme simply tried to emulate Xiaomi in this case and failed to succeed because their panel sourcing was much worse, software support went nowhere and they couldn't really match the price-performance of Xiaomi at the lower end.
