I'm saddened that the open source section is a sub forum now, that too under the OS section.

We discuss not just OSes in the open source section, but other tools, games and apps. As we all know (and praka can confirm it) open source is a force to reckon with that will soon conquer the entire known universe and defeat the forces of evil.

Yes, sometimes there is overlap with the main games/OS section and people will post open source queries there, but we have our very own open source mod Dark_Star to take care of moving them :)

Well, the point of this post is to ask if there is any chance of making the section a first class citizen again?

quite true. open source is not all about linux. its about code as such. Not just OS's - Programming and Applications as well. If Open source Absolutely HAS to be a subforum, i think its better off under applications.
 
Our intention is to separate linux from open source.

I am open to the idea of creating a linux OS section within OS section while keeping the Open Source for the rest of the open source technologies.

Does that make sense?
 
yay! i guess thats a decent idea - one sub section for linux and one main section for open source. :)

i would have thought just leave the single main "open source" section for all the topics - what if we get BSD freaks :P

I just noticed this part... why not just have a single main section "open source" for all topics? else the separate linux section/topics will again be demoted to its subforum ...
 
Huh. Don't do that... Creating a separate Linux section don't make sense :| As Open Source section covers it all Linux, BSD , software and other things .. So a main section for Open Source is much better than having multiple sections for similar things :)
 
either way prakshan is going to spam all of them. so why gve him twice the oppurtunities :P.

A linux subforum in addition to an open source forum is good, but not really needed, especially since we're trying to avoid fragmentation of topics

rename opensource section to Linux .as n00b's first hear Linux ,then only understands GNU/Linux and Open Source.

Most forums does that.and open source means some windows-weakling thought it is the forum for sharing crack codes ,serial numbers and warez . :rofl: I have seen that already!

I support the Open Source Section Title Changed to "Open Source/Linux" which can attract more people to this section ,where many don't really understands FOSS and it's connection with GNU/Linux Operating System. :)
