without any overclocking which one is the best.
opteron 144 [e4][1mb cache]
or venice 3500+ [e6][512mb]
mobo is a8n sli premium ..optys got sse3?

given only those two choices, the preference is obvious!!! the VENICE!!! for the sheer amount of cache it carries.. :D

but for all practical purposes, Opty 144 makes more sense. Costs about three fourths of 3500+, has double the cache and will OC almost the same as 3500+. But, it also depends on what kinda settings u wanna run at. If u have not so OCing RAM, then 3500+'s 11 multi helps achieveing higher clocks at compariticely lower HTT..

About SSE3, both opty n Venice have it.. Personally, Opty's my choice..

3500 runs on 2.2 ghz and opty 1.8 but sheer amount of cache? optys got more cache? so? and whats the multiplier of opty 144? 11x or completely unlocked?

i wont oc for now but i maybe after a year or two and are the performance difference noticable between 1.8 ghz and 2.2 ghz for normal gaming and use and does tht extra 400 mhz worth the extra 3k bucks.

:( it seems tht u guys will make me overclock it well lol :S

LOL its a crime if you buy an opty 144 and don't overclock it :P.

^ Agree completely with Chaos !

Masky you got it mixed up there - the Opty has the larger 1MB cache versus the Venice 512KB ! At stock the Venice would do better since its running at 2.2Ghz versus the 1.8Ghz of the Opty. However if you overclock the Opteron to 2.2Ghz, on account of the 1MB cache it would perform better.

The Opty is a San Diego core, which is well worth the price. In the regular desktop processors , the cheapest San Diego core model is the 3700+ which sells for close to 18K (approx).

The Opty has a 9x multiplier , but there's no shame in using RAM dividers when overclocking like I always say ! Most Opterons overclock quite a lot, whereas the current batches of Venices dont overclock well. Once OC'ed, the Venice's are no match for the Opteron.

Yes, the 400Mhz difference would be noticeable. However IMO, just get the Opty and OC the 400Mhz ;)

i aint goin on water coolin stuffs so opty for 8k what say i shud get it? cant decide help me decide and vecine 11k around
[i'm totally new 2 ocing]

but the way things are going goin for opty and picking up a dual core after a year when the prices falls would be wise i think i can always enjoy yhe 1 mb cache which i canton venice and i've heard opty can hit 2.4 @ stick volts :O
*love the green box though*

read bro.. read.. :)

given that choice, which wud u prefer :bleh:

Just buy the Opty dude!!!!

More cache. and it will oc to 3500+ levels at stock volts. And the 1 MB cache is also a plus point.

And 8K is an Awesome price for something that would cost 17K.

Really.... even at 2.5ghz at stock volts, the Opty will be quite cool.....

Go for it blindly.

@masky ----

Anyway the 1MB will be better than the 512kb :P

@x86 --- You wont need any water cooling or anything... the stock heatsink wiull be enough. The Opty heatsiunk is a beter design than the AMD Athlon design. I think it has heatpipes or something like that..
