I just bought the retail copy of the Half Life Orange Box and the first DVD isnt working. I insert the DVD and in My computer, it says "CD Drive" for the optical drive.

I insert the second DVD and it properly changes to "Orange Box"

What am I supposed to do?

Where'd u get it from? Was thinking of picking up a copy too...

@Asid - The updated gfc files? explain man..

Yup , Indian Orange Box DVD's are corrupt sometimes .

You need to get it exchanged through the store you bought it from or contact Steam

I bought it from Lifestyle. Had gone there to purchase a pair of shoes but ended up picking up these as they didnt have what I wanted in stock.

Everyone I know received atleast 1 unreadable disc in the Orange Box.
Downloading the entire game off Steam after registering your key is your best bet. Or you can go through the ordeal of getting a replacement and hope the new discs work.

I am the only one I know for whom all 3 discs were working, heh.

@Nikhil - Yes , Download Steam , enter the KEY [ Add a Steam Game ] and woila , you're done . Then Start the downloading [ by right-clicking ] of whichever game you want , you're done! :) . I suggest you to download Team Fortress 2 - It's an awesome MP game , and i am add!kted to it ! :P

Add me if you got probs - karanboochra [ Steam ID ]

3 discs ? I got only 2 and both work fine :P

The only problem with my Orange box DVD was that there was only one of them in the box. So, I just sent a mail to WWC and they sent me a fresh copy.

You should try doing the same. Find out who's the Indian distributor and send them a mail.

You are better off asking any TE member with working copy send you the discs written. You cant use it unless you have a key so i assume it is not piracy. In any case you have big ass updates waiting, so you will still end up like 5-6 hrs worth of updates . So be prepared for teh worst. Once that is done, its all smooth sailing from there :D.

dude...the second dvd did not work for me either, I tried 4-5 times, and it worked, so give it a shot, in the meanwhile I also called the distributor and requested for a new copy, they asked me for my mailing addr, but then the 2nd dvd worked !! so dint bother!!!

as karanboochra has pointed out, all you need is the serial.

Download, install and update steam to the latest build.

Create New A/c.

Enter Serial for activation.

Download entire game(Gcf files).

Play.

Well, the original Orange Box din't worked for me either, so I downloaded the ISO's of those 2 DVDs in torrents and registered the game in steam with my valid key!

TOB DVDs were too bad for me. Too much plasticy and light quality. It took hours to reach 50% of installation.

The next step I did was backup the TOB DVD discs onto the hard drive as ISO image file, then mount them and install the game in half the time. Even making ISO doesn't cost a lot of time overall.

Have been easier for me to maintain rather than relying on the DVDs.

Yup, I also had problems with the DVD, but removing and putting them back in for 5-10 times resolved the issue for me....
