OS confusion

Hi,

Due to utter frustration I completely wiped out Windows Vista from my personal laptop and installed Ubuntu. I was able to work with most of my day-to-day stuff and few applications. My friend gifted me an Apple iPad and I wanted to install iTunes to sync it. However there was no iTunes support for Ubuntu and I had to use Wine to install iTunes inside it.

However the iPad doesnt recognize the iTunes installed within the Wine. I also tried installing Windows XP lite within Virtual box, but couldnt install iTunes and sync up with iPad. Now I have decided to either dual-boot Windows (xp or 7) alongside ubuntu or completely wipe off Ubuntu and install Windows (xp or 7).
Though I am not a linux geek, i can follow instructions on modifying grub for dual-boot.

I need Windows XP (SP2/3) software, where can I get it? How much does it sell for, either Windows 7 or XP?

Kindly assist.

Why not Win 7, say the starter pack? My Samsung N128 netbook with a measly 1GB RAM and the Atom processor runs Win 7 Ultimate 32bit without a fuss.

I am in the same quandary. I use Ubuntu for everyday use and as my primary OS, but its only for the iOS devices that I maintain a dual boot with Windows XP. Its not as if I have to update my iPad and iPhones everyday, so I get by with booting into windows every 4-5 days and syncing my devices. I only wish Ubuntu had iTunes support, then I wouldn't need windows for anything!

Indeed, there there are some people who believe that they can run iTunes in Ubuntu(using Wine, etc.), but I've never seen anyone successfully doing it. It's all buggy and non-functional.

If you want to use iTunes, then your best bet is a dual boot your system (i.e. Ubuntu and Win XP or Win 7).

Windows Vista was one mess that even Ballmer publicly accepted... but Windows 7 is in a different Class altogether, performance a bit slower or at par with Windows XP, good graphics hardly any niggles was the reason that I jumped to windows 7 bandwagon from Ubuntu/XP config... I suggest the Windows 7 Home premium (retails for ~6500)...

Thanks for your suggestions.

I checked for Win 7 Home premium in Comcare which costs Rs 5,950. I will check at other places before buying one.

Meanwhile, I used my Win XP CD and completed dual-boot. I must say that Ubuntu forums & documentation are too good and I was able to find correct procedure for dual-boot and restore Ubuntu bootloader (GRUB). This really encourages newbies like me to stay with Ubuntu even though there are few incompatibilities with one like Apple iPad.

I will follow phoenix way of using windows once in a week to sync up and hope Ubuntu gets iTunes support one day!
