Hi,

I need an Operating System for a downloading system which will download files from Rapidshare and other such File Sharing website through Download Manager which should be secure enough to save passwords. This OS should work from Pen Drive.

The Current Setup:
AMD Athlon X64 5200+ With Cool N Quiet
BIOStar A785GE
Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 800MHz
1TB Seagate HDD
2 GB SanDisk (NO DVD Drive)

I currently tested this system using FreeNAS it makes this system run under 32 Degree C with only
500MHz processor utilization.
The only downside of FreeNAS is that they don't have a download manager / maybe i cannot find one.

So bottomline A OS with minimum config to be on a USB drive and a integrated download manager also a Web Access AS NO LCD/KEYBOARD/MOUSE will be connected to this device.

Help! :D

?? which OS is that? OS with minimum config to be on a USB drive and a integrated download manager also a Web Access AS NO LCD/KEYBOARD/MOUSE will be connected to this device< does that pass this requirement

You can fit XP or any linux OS in a 2 gb pendrive. All of them should run the processor at 500Mhz. as there will not be any load on the system. A bar linux system with simple GUI and apps and services only you need would take less than 1 GB (could even be less than 512MB). You could use something like Arch linux /Ubuntu Server Edition/Gentoo. Needless to say you can also use XP. They'll serve all your needs

How would a Windows Server 2008 or Windows Home Server do? Off course i'll have to install it but then I do have 1TB space. The only reason for me to opt for Ubuntu or other linux OS is only if its directly plug'n'play as i don't want to stick around and customize it which i find really hard to do on Linux, I failed Red Hat Exams. Twice :(

Windows Home Server. :)

Had used it for sometime (~3 months) when I had my previous download rig aka the Atom shoebox with me. Worked perfectly without a fuss.

^ Procuring it. I have currently installed Windows 2008 x86 Standard Edition & will use it as i am acustom to the whole server enviornment but it has features that i don't need.

So if i like the features on the Home Server better i'll switch to that. First will try on VM.

Ubuntu is pretty easy to configure , deluge is preloaded (I think , if not , download it) , just enable the webUI and torrents are good to go , install jDownloader for downloading rapidshare / megaupload etc etc , it also has a webUI . Enable SAMBA for easy file /printer sharing with windows and you are good to go . For making it lighter you can uninstall GUI components and enable VNC / SSH for a completely headless server . Its pretty easy to configure . I'd suggest you go with that .

Although id be better if you install it on the HDD .

Ok! First i am trying Ubuntu Linux if i like its WebUI interface like "manu1991" suggested, if not will try Damn Small Linux

Windows Home Server is great once you get it configure it and everything . Check the guide section , a member posted a tutorial for the same .

^ I did install Home Server but its Idle process utilization is 1000Mhz which is quite high compare to 500 Mhz of the linux FreeNAS.

I am testing Ubuntu 10.4LTS, Liking its GUI and Features will see how simple it is to use, as this computer would just be for Downloading Files.

Hi,

Just Finished setting up Ubuntu 10.4LTS. Amazing GUI and rock stable. I have Installed FATRAT as the Download manager as it supports Rapidshare as well as Torrents and the main feature WEBUI.

Its Simple and easy to use.

Will test some more on the VM and see the processor utilization and then implement on the Spare System

Hey Guys! I tested out both DSL & Ubuntu 10.4, the problem is that my Internet gets reset every 5 minutes or so when on that system. I don't mean to say that my router gets disconnected or something. everything is connected but no page is displayed/ download stops. So I am sticking with Windows Home Server.

How much space does WHS need for a deafult install? And can it be managed completely by a WebUI? As I will be using it completely headless.
