Overclocking Phenom X3 ! instructions needed

Yea will be installing Sunbeam CCF in few hours got my screwdrivers .. and will be install Vista again !!! Before i start Overclocking I wanna ask something !!!

Here what I do now for OC.. Since I have a non BE Phenom X3 I cannot fiddle with Multiplier.. So what I am doing now is just bump up the FSB.. Not even changing voltage as someone suggested not to increase volts in stock cooler . I was able to hit 2.7 Ghz but unstable..



Now what I am planning to do..

1. After installing CCF I will 1'st monitor temps @ stock..,

2. I will try and OC and see how max I can hit without changing Voltage !!!

3. WIl try tweaking voltage after that ........

and I need help..

Before increasing the volts i wanna ask few things..

1. So in order to increase CPU volt I need to increase Vcore ? Now its 1.25 by default how much should I increase ? I mean what should be the gap should i increase to 1.3 or 1.27 ? There are lots of options there .... But after 1.5 it should danger sign..

2. Should I use AMD overdrive or BIOS ftw ?

3. Amey told me I will end in cooked Phenom if I increase Memry volts above 2.0 ? Its 1.8 atm so should i leave it as it is ?

4. What I else I need to do gain more Mhz ? No Idea abt HTT ? :ashamed:

5. I am going to use CPU-Z, Everest , 3d/PC marks,Sandra an PI ? ANy more should i need ! Should I use Orthos for stability test ?

6. How am I suppose to change Dram:Fsb ratio to 1:1 .. Its 2:1 atm !!!

Currently have 2 fans one of intake and one at rear . Now I can install 2 more fans at the transparent side panel ? Should I get one more 120mm for HSF and mem cooling ?

Well please do post some suggestions . I will be doing it few hours :D Will see how much I can crank up that spider :bleh: .. WIll post the benchs asap !

1st, you don't need a screwdriver to install the CCF on a AMD system. It clips on to the stock bracket, but it's a very tight fit. A LOT of pressure is required, I though I would break my Phenom 9950 heatspreader. It clips on very securely though, and you never feel it will fall or work loose.

2nd, I don't know how much extra you'll get out of a non-BE Phenom. Depending on your board you can shoot for a max of 270-280HTT. Memory volts shouldn't be an issue, but you wouldn't need them if you aren't pushing the memory hard.

3rd, I wouldn't go above 1.35-1.37 with air, even if it is a CCF. I have done 1.45 myself, and my CPU got uncomfortably hot. I backed it off since.

4th, I wouldn't push your system too hard on the voltage. I don't know how much that POV PSU can take by way of overclocking. I think you need a slightly better PS if you want to push the system. Up to 1.35 on the CPU and 1.95 on the memory should be fine. Any more, and you're risking everything.
 
waaa i got my phenom 8450 to 2.8g on air and i can think it can go till 3.4
always remeber to lower ur memory speeeds and ur ht freq must always be lower than ur nb frequency or ur system will become unstable
 
Few questions I missed answering:

Use BIOS, and memtest in DOS mode. That weeds out the first level of issues.

HTT=FSB. There is technically no FSB in an AMD (or i7) system, as the Front Side Bus is used by the chipset memory controller to link CPU and memory. As these two CPUs have onboard memory controller, they use HTT link speed to determine the CPU and memory speed, using multipliers.

The CPU:Mem speed ratio should be tweakable in BIOS. Not familiar with yours, but you'll have to go under the hood and figure that one out yourself. Sync will not work with that memory and that CPU speed, AFAIK, but you're free to try.

I would suggest take the entire motherboard out of the case, install your heatsink, and go for it while the mobo is outside. Makes it easy to reset (you might need to do that if you do something ambitious) or clear the BIOS (if you do something too ambitious).
 
dont increase ur cpu voltage too much i just raised my cpu core voltage .50mv just for stability to get till 2.8 ghz.dont cross more than .100mv for core voltage .
 
@ Sangram thanks for the heads up :) I know I don't need screwdriver to install SCCF I posted that because I was planing to install it after remove the Mb from the case.. and a bit of cleaning needs to be done :P

Now I got a fan controller with SCCF , it needs to placed in PCI solt ?:S I wanna install it will I be able to control fan speed I won't install it !

Edit : How much should I increase V for beginning ! ::P
 
Ok finally installed the HSF ! Man its way to tough and in jetway the Nortbridge interfere with it :@ so got some help from amarbir . Did a better cable management this time :) Will be installing WIndows maybe today ;)

Something messed up seems like some connector not placed correctly had to power on by opening cabinate :P 28* Celsius :yahoo:

Edit : Where I am suppose to install that fan controller ?
 
keep an eye on the CPU temps and not the core temperature which are always reported lower in an AMD system. i found Everest pretty good for this.

Also down the HT multiplier so that the HT Bus speed is 1000 Mhz or close.

Err.. Nothing changed,OCing is same as stcok. or I am doing worng ? ! I increased the FSB to 235 with Vcore 1.30 still not stable.. I set the Dram : FSB to 1:1 and .. That SS posted is with Vcore 1.27 though I tried it with 1.30 as well ..



I am even getting vertical tearing @ 2.58 ghz :@ The screen keeps on flicker and tearing ... What to do for better OC ?
 
Omg. ur HT link is at 2070 Mhz. Dude put the HT link multiplier at 4x. It appears to be at 9x.

No wonder ur system must be unstable as hell.

First get the max oc on ur cpu. mess with the ram later.

If possible, put some snaps of your bios.

Edit : Dropped the HT to 200 Mhz now

Still same instability !
 
also the ram timings and speed from cpu-z or everest.

I reckon you have super pi mod ? right.

If not, dl it asap becoz to check for any performance improvement and degradation you'll have to check for an average of 3 from the 1M benchmarks.

You can stress test later.
 
arrey bhai. HT link != HTT

HTT = FSB

HT link speed = FSB (HTT) x HT multiplier

CPU/Core Speed = FSB (HTT) x CPU miltiplier

Run your HT link close to 1000 Mhz while increasing the FSB and CPU multiplier so that you can get the best possible CPU speeds.

No point running DRAM:FSB @ 1:1. In most new AMD systems, they always run unlinked. Run it at a divider till you get stable clocks and try to attain the max cpu oc. Ram oc only has limited benefit, both in real world and synthetic benchmarks
 
keep the multiplier lowest & increase ur HT link slowly . then , get what is the max. HT link speed ur CPU is stable at . decrease HT link speed by 5-10Mhz from max. stable speed & then adjust multiplier .

have u gone through m-any articles on OC'ing ??
if Not , then gOOgle for it & go through many of them .....
