even.. I am super confused about this one. My requirements are more or less same as yours. I'm not sure about the viewing distance but the room specs are 14.5" x 10.5"; so not sure if 42" would suffice or be a overkill.

Anyone having idea, what would be the difference in power consumption in LCD/LED/Plasma? Will there be a substantial difference in bill - thousands or just few hundred bucks?

better get a full hd tv if you want to get a 42 incher.

42" would not be overkill IMO for your room size. It would just be very nice.
 
Im using a 40" TV at roughly 7 feet watching distance. It's good for games but normal TV viewing needs getting used to but is good.
