Panasonic TH-L32C8DX and TataSky DTH: Best settings?

Hello:

Just bought the LCD TV and hooked it up to TataSky.

With 4:3 on TataSky and 4:3 on TV, get a picture of good quality but leaves dark bands on the left and right. 16:9 and zoom modes on TV do not give a good picture.

With 16:9 on TataSky and 16:9 on TV, some channels are good and some are pretty bad.

My 20-year old Sony color TV has a better picture.

Any suggestions for improving the picture quality?
