Well I have a 500gig hdd in my lappy and I wanted to have partitioning similar to windows multiple drives.

With linux the problem is even though I create a separate partition it does not by default allow me to write data to it. I can either add myself to the read write group or do 777 for full access to all. Is there any other better method?

check out how to edit /etc/fstab by googling and/or refering samples...

if the partitions are mounted "ro" (read only) perhaps you can change the entries in fstab to "defaults" ...
