Partition Lost!

I lost my drive letter for my G partition. It no longer shows in
Windows Explorer. When I go to Administrative Tools > Computer Management >
Disk Management I see the 20 Gb used partition but with no letter. I tried
to assign a letter to it but I get an error message "The operation failed to
complete because the disk management console view is not up to date... to
refresh or restart the computer. I did but to no avail, I get the same
message.

I believe this has something to do with the partition table as I tried to
load an older copy of Partition magic from a floppy. That's when I got the
error stating something about the partition table then the program failed to
load. Is there a way I can fix the partition table to see my G drive again
It is visible in Ubuntu.
But i don't have a spare drive to copy into.
if this is the problem? Thanks so much!

^^ok mate boot from the windows 7 dvd, select install now, after that when you will see the hdd drive, just select the drive which you cannot format/access from windows, and format it right there. This should solve your problem. Else get UBCD and use the partitioning tools found there.

try TestDisk. I recently used this wonderful piece of code to recover 2 partitions that disappeared after installing windows 7 with xp.

I can recover the data instantly by using Ubuntu Live CD. But I want to make Windows recognize the partitions without having to format the partitions, since it would lead to loss of data

I don't have enough space! To copy the data back. I've lost around 1/3 rd of my space and it'll be a while before i get some extra space. Hope that happens soon. Is there a way to make Windows recognize all the data? Without formatting?

It had happened to me long time back on xp, i think what i did was recover the partition using this app Active@ Partition Recovery. Recover Deleted Partition. Undelete NTFS & FAT partitions.
hope it helps.
EDIT: I dunno about the limitations in the free version.

They even have a version for DOS!!!
LOL :D

I had a similar problem...My external drive was not readable...I got a msg ...Want to format disk...wen i tried to open...

I tried EASEUS.Data.Recovery.Wizard.Professional.v5.0.1 and bingo got back 100% of my data.
Maybe it can also help you around.

I can send you the software....
Just PM me if you want the same
