Storage Solutions Partitioning HDD

greetings friends. I bought a 320gb Seagate HDD (7200.10). I plan to use it with the external casing as a portable hdd. Now the only formality is partitioning it. Want to know the best way to proceed. Anyone here who has used gpart or a linux installation disc to partition please help me. also anyone who has used tools like Partition magic (some friends warned me against using this) and the like please help me out
 
I've used partition magic before. Works like a charm.. but before using it, make sure u have a backup power supply (a UPS or something) in case of power failures.
