Hi. Need to buy a replacement battery off eBay USA for my iRiver. He only accepts PayPal.. how can I go about this?

The guy ships to India, btw.

Sign up for a paypal account... however, most eBay.com sellers accept payments only from verified members with confirmed addresses to get seller protection on their sales. If you don't already have a paypal account, it will take time to get verified. Your best bet is to check if he accepts BidPay - he might ask you about Western Union, but problem with WU in India is that you can't *send* money, only receive - really silly but that's how it worked about 1-2 years ago.

Nope, no way to do that... you're better off with using your credit card anyways because you can dispute charges, with debit cards/accounts you can't really dispute (not in India at least).

nowadays you can get a verified paypal a/c in a few days. they ask you to make a payment of $1.99 and a code appears in the transaction name on ur cc statement which you have to key in at the paypal site and your account is verified. the 1.99 will be credited to your paypal and you can use it on your next purchase

not sure if you can link to bank accounts but if you have an icici account you can try getting those online shopping credit cards where there is a rs10000 limit on transactions (think its a per transaction limit)

No its not possible to link it with the bank account. What exactly are you worried about. I can help you out with the payment if you want. As in I can make the paypal payment on your behalf if you are worried about security as I have virtual cards which expire in 24 hours. Its an HDFC visa debit card service.

^Okay, thanks.
I'll sign up using my CC.. but I'm kinda worried. Is it possible to link it to my bank a/c?

no need to worry... i have been using a CC paypal account since last 1 yr ...
you cant link to bank account.

you will be charged 2.5 % extra ... thats it.

No extra charges... not once in the last 5 years have I been charged anything additional, not by PayPal and neither by my bank.

Some ads were introduced for Premium members recently and that's not what I was paying for, so I canceled. I would have paid more if there are financial problems, but I'm not going to pay AND have ads on the site.

EDIT: :P

@Ren - I'm gonna take you up on the offer..
It is ~20$ all in all for the battery + shipping, it comes from Hong Kong.
I don't think there should be any duty on this, so how do I go about it?

payapl charges 2.5 % extra through their exchange rate values ....

If your transaction involves a currency conversion, it will be completed at a retail foreign exchange rate determined by PayPal, which is adjusted regularly based on market conditions. This exchange rate includes a 2.5% spread above the wholesale exchange rate at which PayPal obtains foreign currency, and the spread is retained by PayPal. The specific exchange rate that applies to your multiple currency transaction will be displayed at the time of the transaction.

always check the fine print :P

Techhead , you wont be charged duty on this ... its a single item and small value. just make sure the ebay vendor has a high rating & doesnt ship from china.

There are no charges for buyers sending money via PayPal - I don't think so, I know so :) Sellers, in order to receive money, will be charged fees by PayPal... how do you think PayPal is so popular? If they charged buyers too, why will they prefer PayPal? ;)

you are sending dollar / euro etc through the credit card and credit card companies as you know always charge transaction fees ( 2 to 3 % depending on the bank ) . in this case , they charge it to paypal... so thats why paypal, to recover this charge in the end gets a flat 2.5% from us otherwise they will incur losses ... business model at its best .

No idea where you getting this info from, but they don't :) PayPal charges buyers NO FEES, their whole business model is BUILT ON THAT. PayPal makes money from sellers/merchants/people who receive or withdraw funds. Show me where they mention that buyers will be charged, or they will recover fees from buyers :P

Meet me on MSN or yahoo after 10PM today. My IDs are in my profile. We'll make the payment tonight and you just transfer over ICICI or HDFC to me.

Paypal charges from those who recieve the money over paypal. Not from sender.

next time when you buy something , check the exchange rate on that day and compare that to whats on your CC bill and see if it matches the rate ... you will get the answer :)

I've been working with PayPal on and off for the last 5 years, I know how they make money, who gets charged what, why they charge what they do - it's my job to know their policies, internal and external :) So I'm not going to waste my time checking a statement or talking about this here again...
