guys, my config is win 7 sp1 ultimate 32bit

CORSAIR CX400
phenom 550be,
asus m3n78em,
2x2gb ddr2 transcend,
1tb seagate hdd,
yamaha ymf724 sound card,
xfx geforce 9600gt

Last week, when i attempted to unplug the audio cable from my sound card, my pc froze with a white screen. Thereafter i restarted it and it started working normally.

A couple of days back my servant closed the drawer of the table on which my pc is kept and while doing so there was a slight vibration and at that time the same white screen showed up. After restarting everything went usual until today evening.

My pc was switched on from morning and when i came back from work i found the screen is black and none of the keyboard keys work (incl the numlock and capslock key). restarted and running ok and after half an hour of tally work, it froze with a black screen. Now after restart, there is no display and even the bios logo failed to show up.

In the above circumstances, what could be the issue guys ?. As an initial measure, i have unplugged all the components except the processor and replugged everything except my gfx card and sound card and the pc is working and under observation now. So if the same issue is going to continue what should i do guys ?. I can easily give advise to anyone who comes with these issues , but when it comes to me, i am very weak in handling these.

I suspect the following hw components:

sound card
gfx card
memory
hdd (could it be ??)
finally the dvi cable which is a chinese make...

So please help guys....

thanx in advance...

What power supply are you using? Are the power connectors properly connected?

Are you sure the PC is freezing and not just a problem with the display? Try using onboard graphics and see if you have another DVI cable.

I suspect a loose connection somewhere. Most probably your GPU or RAM. Try tightening everything once before suspecting hardware failure.

running hdtune for around 2.5 hours and there are no freezes as for now.

@viralbug - if its a monitor issue, then the numlock keys ought to have worked i guess.. Even if its cable issue can it cause the keyboard not to function during a freeze ?.

When dismantling my gpu, i found that its held very firm to the pci xpress slot's retention clip. So there is no chance of loose conduct. So is the case of the sound card and ram ...

One noob question guys. Can a bad dvi cable damage a gpu ?

currently running with onboard gpu and everything runs normal with hdtune ...

Is the VGA screwed down to the PCI.E bracket docks on the chassis..?

Yes ofc. The card is a lengthy one and without screwing, it will be very lose and its not possible to connect the dvi cable if its not screwed...

corsair cx400 mate..

9600gt capacitor blown. Could that be a reason ?. Some say that one single capacitor cannot cause such an issue and there must be something wrong with the card apart from the blown capacitor.. Please enlighten me guys...

9600 GT cards are famous for black screen of death. I had to replace my Palit 9600 GT twice in the last 2 and a half years for the same issue.

The problem would occur randomly causing the PC to hang at times and then if I rebooted it would reboot, you could hear the sound of the PC booting and actions but no display. I would recommend getting the card replaced (if in warranty) before the problem gets worse.

Yes, a GFX card with blown capacitor should have rendered it dead but you were lucky, now you only need to get a new capacitor for it. Yes, a missing capacitor will cause a lot of instability issues and you should stop using the 9600GT ASAP.

One more thing, you said "as soon as unplug the audio cable from my sound card, my pc froze with a white screen". You should disable Audio Jack Detection(jack sensing) if it's enabled in the Realtek Sound Manager since it's a very buggy feature.

That is an age old sound card which is ignorant of jack sensing. i have disabled realtek sound card...
