hi guys first of all here is the system config.

AMD FX 4100

4Gb Gskill ripjaws 1600mhz

MSI 970a G46 motheboard

corsair HX750 PSU

WD black 500gb

Sunbeam tuniq 120 extreme(recently added)

The problem started all of a sudden while doing some net browsing.PC shuts down without any warning, like when the power cord is pulled off...

The north bridge heatsink was very very hot.Hot enough to burn my finger.

I hit the power button after waiting for a minute. The PSU fan started for a second and went off.

The fan on the cooler does the same thing>the LED indicators on the motherboard blinks and then goes off.

The same is happening with all the components except the processor is removed.Just as if the PSU is sensing some short circuit

I tried the following

swapped the processor with a phenom II chip,,checked ram on another system .Swapped the PSU

Got a spare motherboard and transferred the proccy, ram,PSU,HDD to it.This combo is working fine

Recent changes made

Changed my old thermalright 120 cooler with a tuniq 120 extreme. The board was handled with bare hands for a while.
Did some stress tests couple of hours earlier.

What could be the problem?

Looks like you've answered your question already:

The motherboard's NB chip might be dead/dying because of the overheating. I don't suppose the CPU cooler swapping was the issue here. Did your PC chassis have sufficient ventilation? How many inlet/exhaust fans does it have?

How long have you been running this MSI + FX4100 combo?

thanks for response..
me too thinks that the board has indeed failed.Infact it is only a week old.

I was using a phenom II chip and changed to fx4100 only one day ago.I am running this without a case for a while now.The VRM area was kept cool by a fan directed at it..
The board is just a week old..
what is the procesure for MSI RMA? There is one digicare center in my city.

Take it to Digicare. They are the service partners for MSI. Take the invoice along.

if it's a one week old mobo only then take it to the seller and see if you can get a better mobo from asus by paying extra.

Like I said msi mobos [ amd chip] has vrm issue so to be trouble free in the future change the mobo if you can.

Its been given to digicare..the issue is not with vrm I think..since It wasnt overclocked and its only a 95 w CPU.
The vrm issue was more prominent on the earlier versions.I was keeping the vrm area cool just to be safe.anyway I am not a techie to diagnose this issue
Will change to Asus or gigabyte very soon

may be 95W TDp cpus is Ok with this mobo but still I'm concerned about the quality of the VRMs .. anyway, nice to know you will change to better board soon be careful to choose a good mobo with better VRM cooling.

hi,an update regarding the board.just got the board replaced by digicare..running fine

Also one concern,I didnt get any rma receipt or replacement letter for the new board. Will i be able to claim warranty with the original bill in the future? the serial no is changed.anyways bill was not asked or required..

you should get a rma receipt.. just go to digicare and insist for rma receipt while the matter is still fresh. I've seen digicare rejecting msi motherboard rma based on the s/n on it completely ignoring purchase bill though later they had to take it for rma when pressurised through proper channel.

i asked them about the receipt through telephone, but they said bill is not required to claim.I will insist for the same as suggested...thank you

Hi, I am having the same symptoms with a Gigabyte GA-H77N-WIFI that I purchased off of Flipkart. The motherboard booted into BIOS turned off while I was tweaking the settings and when I turn it on again, the CPU fan twitches and stops. Tried resetting CMOS, different power supplies, different recommended memory etc. that I have lying around to no avail. When I called Flipkart for a replacement, they said that they don't have a new one in stock and would only refund me. The thing is, I got the board at a good discount and I like the features that it has so I'm thinking of just having Gigabyte fix it for me. Has anyone dealt with the Gigabyte Service Partner in Bangalore and do you have their number? Thanks in advance.[DOUBLEPOST=1374501948][/DOUBLEPOST]So I tracked down Gigabyte's service center in Koramangala, Bangalore, took the board there and the techie who checked it out said that he could find nothing wrong with it when he put it on his own test stand. So I brought the board back home, put in all the components again and it is working fine. I'm scratching my head because I changed nothing in the configuration. I'm guessing that something had not seated properly. Oh, well!
