PC Problem by a friend

A friend of mine has a problem with his pc,he is a novice user..
anyways i dont know whats his problem,therefor here it is maybe you guys can help him.

Lately I have been problems with the computer: whenever I am starting up word/powerpoint or outlook files, the computer slows down and sometimes freezes. Every once in a while it does so at random. Explorer then takes up about 50 - 150,000 kb of memory. When I close Explorer and then restart it through opening a new folder, the computer works ok again, but the problem keeps recurring

the comp is an Acer Intel Pentium, processor 1300 Mhz, 512 Ram

any help is apprecited,thanks in advance guy's

explorer using 100% cpu seems to a common issue..crops up now and then. problems range from spyware to too many programs loading at start up.

the task manager shows a lot of user programs. try going to msconfig (run>msconfig) and uncheck any software that wont be used frequently to prevent it from being loaded at startup. may help a bit

sure some of the software gurus will be around to fix your friends problem soon

Seems to happen more with earlier P4s esp those using SDRAM.(assuming u have atleast 512mb of ram).
IE is a resource hog.Use Firefox-much faster.

Solution 1
Do these two features look familiar ?

-show common tasks for folders
-fade or slide menus into view

By default Windows XP,enables both these ,which doesnt look like too much hassle .But what happensd is that the animation associated with right clicking a file in windows explorer may not be able to finish using a LOT of your CPU resources and eventualy causing Explorer.exe to use 100 Percent and CRASH !

Simply disable these two innocent little features you take for granted and could do well without !

Turn Off the "Fade or Slide Menus into View" Visual Effect
1.Start->Control Panel->Performance and Maintenance->System
2.On the Advanced tab->Performance->Settings
3.On the Visual Effects tab, click to clear the Fade or slide menus into view check box.

Use Classic Windows Folders
1.Start->Control Panel->Appearance and Themes->Folder Options or (My computer->tools->folder options on my windows 2000)
2.On the General tab, click "Use Windows classic folders."

In case you dont want apply these guidelines,do not directly right click on a file,but choose it and then right click or upgrade your RAM .Also get SP2 and an online virus scan.

NOTE: another explorer.exe related error is when
Explorer.exe starts repeatedly quits unexpectedly in Windows XP

Solution 2
Open Windows Media Player, click Tools, go to options then performance ->in the Video acceleration, slide the bar to the middle if it was to the right extreme.

Fix all the items in RED and I really don't know abt the blue entries, ask if ur friends knows abt it, if not it can be fixed.

a very simple solution to this problem ..... gt a msconfig done i.e

1) start>run>type msconfig in the open box > in the new window which pops up goto the tab which says 'startup' in the extreme right hand corner , in that window on the right hand bottom therez a button called ' disable all ' , click that , then u can check ur anti virus . This will avoid running ur programs at the start up , most of them which u see in the system tray and will save memory space . Now in the adjoining tab to 'startup' just to the left of it , u shall see services , click on it ..... then at the bottom towards the center u shall see a box which says ' hide all microsoft services ' check that box , now u will see a few services , uncheck the ones besides the anti-virus .

2) 2ndly and most importantly get Ad-aware ,update it , and get a full scan done .

with these two things done , even a p2 with 64 MB ram wud run fine (and yea minus the anti virus s/w from start up and of course on win 98 )

I am AlbertPacino's friend. Thank you very much for all your help. So far the computer seems to be running better. The Panda Active Virus Scan recognized 6 viruses, while McAfee, Stinger, and Symantic did not find those!
