Guys, this problem is on my friend's machine.

After powerup, machine boots fine. gets past POST and boot normally but all of the sudden powers. this happens within 15-20seconds of booting. Usual suspects are RAM,CPU over heating and bad PSU. any other?

I have already replaced RAM and PSU. But how do I check for CPU overheating? its award bios does not seem to display temps.

System Config:
Intel P4 2.4Ghz
Intel 845 mobo
1GB + 256mb DDR RAM

No, Didn't try that.

btw, There was lot of dust in heatsink, so I have removed. Indeed it was messy, it seems nobody cleaned it from past 3-4years. also, the the thermal paste has worn out.so I guess I have to apply a new one.

Now the problem is, I never applied a thermal paste before. so need instructions and also where to get new thermal paste? and its cost
 
Arctic silver is a good themal paste. But you got to see whether you want to apply Ceramic based or Metal based paste.

You would need only a drop though.

Basic things u need to acquire would be the paste and a cleansing agent like Isopropyl Alcohol or Acetone.

Make sure that you have scraped all what was left of the prev paste both from the cpu and the heat sink's contact point.

I had a similar problem as yours and with such blazing temperature, i think your problem Should be with the heatsink and thermal paste issue.

Apply the thermal paste on the cpu and not on the heatsink.
there are two ways of applying the paste
1. apply a small paper thin layer on the entire cpu core, pls do not apply too much or it would spill over. Excess is not always good :no:

2. The easier way is to apply a small drop(centre) on the cpu ,the size of a grain and place the heatsink ,it would gradually spread once the pressure is applied.

Pls note clean the both the surfaces well and get rid of the old paste.

How to I remove old material? I rubbed it off by hand and surface seems shiny. do I need to anything more
 
Clean the residual paste on the proccy with the cleaner as suggested.

As per the heat sink contact, Scrape it with a knife or a Credit Card or something, then clean with cleansing agent to make it mint.

Nahi baba, I had already removed it before you had given my that link. After I read then I realized:ashamed:
 
Only buy the Thermal fusion or the MX2 tim, they are the best and I have tried most of the other to, non curing and non conductive.

The temps in the award bios are in the hardware info section, just see all the other options and you will find them.

for a proper application of the tim just put a little pea sized ball on the center of the cpu and then seat the cleaned heatsink on it, the pressure of the calipers will spread the tim to all areas, remember the less and more smoothly applied tim is better than more tim, it should be translucent to look at.
 
Though you have all ready done it, use Isopropyl Alcohol to remove the residual TIM. And then you can use the pea dot method, or place a thin line and spread it even with an old credit card or something. Once you mount the HSF, try to move it with your hand, it should not budge even a wee bit. Do not go by the BIOS temperatures they are not always correct. IF the system lets you get past the BIOS and to the desktop, then use RealTEMP, CoreTEMP, or HW Monitor to inspect the temperatures.
 
Well I had exact same problem. The culprit in my case was motherboard.

Try using a different motherboard as well if possible.
