PC Peripherals PC shutting down abruptly

Hi All,

I am new to this forum.

For the past few days, my PC has been shutting down abruptly. Sometimes it shuts down even before the grub display (where it asks me to choose either Linux or windows installation). Sometimes it shuts down while I am in the middle of something. Initially, I have windows xp and fedora core 13 dual boot. The fedora core had a command "memtest-setup". On executing this, an entry(Memtest86+ 4.10) for memtest got created in grub. However, when I try to select this entry from the grub display at startup, I get a message "Error 13: Invalid or Unsupported executable format". So I could not run the memtest.

I had moved the desktop from Bangalore to Mumbai some time back. So I thought maybe the problems are due to some loose connection as a result of the shifting. So I have now removed and plugged most of the sockets on the mobo. Not sure when the next shutdown will happen. I have also noticed that once the shutdown happens. the pc doesn't start even after pressing the power button. I have to remove the power supply, then plug it back in and then attempt the startup again.

Has anyone faced a similar situation or could direct me on how to go about figuring out the problem? Issue is I have only this desktop at home. So if this doesn't boot up I can't even access the internet. So would be great if someone could also point me to some good repair guy in Mulund, Mumbai area whom I could contact as a last resort.

Regards.

I have faced it and in my case it was the Power supply. But don't expect the same in your case . Why don't you give some info on your config?

Do you by any chance use a spike/voltage guard ? Just a few months ago my pc would suddenly shut down 2-3 times a week and I realized my spike guard (cheap) was the culprit. It was making a soft crackling sound too. I have since then purchased a quality voltage guard and no random shutdowns since.

Your problem could also be due to your PSU. However, I am no expert on this matter and would suggest you wait for some suggestions/comments from more experienced members here.

Also, post your full pc config.

Hi Hash/Memento,

Thanks for your replies.

Is this what you guys mean by config? (Kindly pardon my ignorance here)
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-G32M-S2L
Physical RAM: 4GB
OS: Windows XP SP3 and Fedora Core 13(x64) dual boot
HDD: 80 GB
Samsung DVD ROM.
Processor: Intel Pentium 4, 2933 MGHz

Is there anything else you guys need for config?

Yesterday, I removed the RAM from the slots, cleaned it up and replaced them back. The computer hasn't shutdown after that. I am keeping my fingers crossed :).

Regards.
