CPU/Mobo PC stalls for no reason!!

HI..
I have a P4 2.8Ghz processor, an intel D865 motherboard, 256 mb ram, geforce 2 mx200 gpu

and an 80 gb sata hdd. The problem occouring is that when im using the pc and irrespective

of what work im doing, it sometimes just hangs. At this time neither the keyboard nor does

the mouse work. I have checked the temprature which reaches about 58 degrees a little high

though. I also checked the connections to the hard disk and cd rom. When the pc stalls the

hard disk light stops flashing though i can feel the hard disks working. Could it be a

software problem?? I scanned my pc for spyware using spyware doctor, viruses with AVG and

scanned the registry with registry mechanic. What could cause this problem? please help...

Win 98 frequently hang. If all solutions result 0 than use Win 2000 as OS. It is more stable than 98. This is one of my friends experience who use Win2000 from last 3-4 yrs.
