OK, I've gone through most of this forum and lemme tell you I AM a little dazed! ;) I've a crappy Rs.150/- PC Frontech Speakers and the very 2nd day the transformer burned out (due to excessive vtg. which is very common in India:@ ), and I just couldn't even return this thing back..
Caution : These speakers look very pleasing to the eye , Grey + White, look futuristic!! :S (I'll see if I can upload a pic of 'em sometime)
Then using my ingenuity, I opened out the speakers, found the transformer, removed it, went to the nearby electronic shop, asked for a transformer that looked like this (I also matched the specifications!), was promptly told that such (small) transformers weren't avble in the market and was a given a bigger, bulkier one costing Rs.25/- or so and I've fixed it (it fit OK though t'was big and I could close the case!) and its been working fine since.. However, I ain't satisfied with the O/P performance!(Who will be??)...
OK .. I'm the kind who want all the bass, woofer , surround sounds etc.. etc.. while watching all those action movies on the comp.. My rooms' quite small and I'd ask you guyz to suggest a good surrond speaker system, probably 2.1 should fit my budget (I'm cash - strapped you know!).
Max. I can offer will be 1.3K..
and I heard someone say the best surround speaker systems are those that are built by ourselves.. Can someone shed some light on this??

I could't find the inspires anywhere, the shopkeeper told me they aren't available anymore.

Bought the sbs370 instead for the same price.
Nice set for the price - good for music/games, and good enough for movies.

Get Altec lansing 2.1 I dunno the exact model No. or better still if you have extra cash, get ATP 3 for 2.5k odd worth every bit off extra penny spent.

CreAtivE or SBS What does TE prefer?

Creative has 2 models - Inspire and SBS (SBS is not a company name)

Altec Lansing have the AVS300 2.1 channel set, sounds pretty decent enough.

Does the sbs370 come with the subwoofer ie. 2.1???

It's 2.1 alright, comes with a woofer as well as a corded remote controller.
And SBS 370 is only the model name - Creative SBS 370 2.1.

FOr a self assembled system, you'll have to hike your budget a bit....

It's not worth building a home brew amp + Spks below a certain threshold....

However, if you want to take an easy and cheap way out, and want to get the thumpiest bass for the least money possible

I'd suggest buying a pair of pre-built plywood cased 8" Woofer + midrange speaker boxes (should be arnd 800-1000 depending on the quality in your local electronic flea market) and a pre-built 2 (not 2.1) channel transistor Driver amp (If u gng to a local eletronic market, ask em for transistor based amps, not IC based ones as the IC based cheap amps usually have very poor s/n ratio) .. this would be another 700-800

Since u r frm chennai, you'll need to head to Ritchie street i guess

If you are willing to spend a little more (at least 5K+), you can build yourself a superlative sound setup which will be easily worth the effort that you will need to put into it....

My amp specs are in the rig... gallery

So, this config, gives me a better system than the Creative Inspire Or SBS 2.1 for around 1.8K?? and what type of O/P cable do I get? to the PC port or Audio/Video cable to connect to DVD player??

IMHO... get the ALTEC Lansing AVS 300... then get the AVS 200 too..

then... connect them up as a 4.1 system.. Thats If you have a proper sound card.. or if ur inbuilt sound supports it..

the AVS 300 U will get for around 1175(I bought mine on the 30th)

Ans the AVS 200 for around 200RS..

so.. for around 1.5K.. u get allmost surround sound...

Just my 2 cents!!

I'd say definitley yes....(but am sure many others would have a different opinion ;) )

But since you can't expect audiophile quality on a budget of ~1.5-2K, this setup will gobble up the chottu Inspires and SBSs for breakfast ;)

But they definitly won't look pretty :P

as for connecting it to your PC, you'll basically need a Stereo-RCA cable...for the DVD player, I'd guess you'll need a RCA-RCA cable...don't worry, just ask the shop guy you'll buy the amp from for the cable

PS: Helpp...what is with that funny (seemingly google) ad appended in the link in my last post

OK got the prices from the dealer today!

Creative SBS 2.1 -- Only Rs. 1,075/- Boxed with Warranty - FRESH stock

There was also a local brand called 'TEXONIC' (or was it texsonic??) with 2 speakers (big and I presume a woofer as well), built in amp, inbuilt FM for Rs.750/-. He said this too was moving fast and had gr8 sound o/p..

Or If I had to assemble myself...

Amplifier (not transistorized, he said they aren't avble right now, but hey I din't go to Ritchie st.!) around - Rs.400/-

Speakers - with good effect - around 400/-

So the whole setup comes to around Rs.800/- . He also said the woofers aren't reqd.. But hey are the woofers avble separately at all??

Which do I opt for???

the assembled system that you are talking about is a plain jane 2 channel (not 2.1) setup and is quite good enough for listening to MP3s

(MP3s and also DivX audio is 2 channel only)

As for the spks, and amp, i'd seriously suggest you go to Ritchie and llok around for a transitorized Amp (That's what they call em in the local parlance) and a decent speaker pair with 8" woofers (Not subwoofers0

The price of a decent pair will be around 800/-

If the one u r gettig is coming for 400/-, the in all ikelihood, it will have cheap speakers with low quality magnets and diaphragms...

As with PSUs, the easiest way to judge the quality is the weight...good speakers will have a heavy magnetic core and hence will feel heavy when u pick em up....

Also, try pushing the diaphragm on the woofers very lightly, it should be freely moving without any signs of friction/abrasion against the coils/core walls....

As i said earlier, Ritchie is your best bet for choice and prices when it comes to PC parts as well as local electronics

suggest you
