CPU/Mobo Pc upgradation - Suggestions required

far cry

Contributor
Hi All,

Looking to upgrade my PC soon.
My Current config stands as follows:
Intel C2D E6400 2.13 Ghz.
Asus P5B
1 GB * 2 Corsair Value select RAM
2 DVD RW Drives
1 250 GB HDD
Nvidia 7600 GS 512
Monitor 17" CRT
Running on stock PSU-400 W came with Zeb Antibiotics Cabinet.

I game on 1074*768 or 1280*1024.

Things I have in mind:
PSU: Gigabyte 460 W/ Corsair CX 400 W// FSP Saga II/ Blue Storm ---400/500 W ( Depending on how much cash i left with
HDD: 1 TB Seagate
GPU: Please suggest should I go for a ATI 4670 now and upgrade to a ATI 6000 series later or simply buy a
ATI 5670 - 512 MB ( I don't think I need more than that on 1280*1024)
RAM: Will adding one more stick of 1 GB/2GB help in gaming.
UPS: Suggest me a 800 VA or 1 KV apart from APC( I connect my speakers and monitors with it)

Also, no more upgrade for 18-24 months after this. I will be overclocking to 2.5- 2.6 Ghz on stock cooler.

Would it be a good to get the GPU from US. Any brand that will entertain RMA/warrenty issues locally here.

Thanks All.

12 K; but flexible

UPS: 800VA ~ 3-3.5k/ 1K VA~4-4.5k

HDD: 1TB 7200.12 Seagate ~ 3.1k

PSU: Gigabyte Superb 460 ~ 2.2k

Total: 8.5-10k

So u have to exceed budget to get a decent GPU. Get a Sapphire HD5670 512MB GDDR5 ~ 5k. That should do well for ur resolution for 1.5-2 years.

Hey guys, I am hoping to get more suggestion in terms of :
whether the upgradation I am planning is good to go with or do you guys suggest something else.
Need suggestions for GPU, RAM and UPS.

I think even a 600VA ups (~Rs.1500) would do for you.
My 1KVA ups would trip if when tried starting my 17"crt monitor while it was on battery, but would run fine if it was already on. A friend of mine had a config similar to yours, and had no problems running his set-up of a 600VA ups. You'll only get 5-12 mins back-up though. And a max of 20-25 mins with a 1KVA ups.

Don't buy a gpu yet, the mid to low end hasn't seen much competition for the last year, but with nVidia releasing their low end gpu's soon, prices should drop in a month or two.

Adding more RAM won't help you in most games, but it will make your computing experience smoother, especially if you're running windows7. Get 2*1Gb more so that you can continue to run your RAM in dual channel mode.

A 400w smps should be enough as long as you aren't planning on upgrading again. But if I were you, and keeping an eye on how quickly lcd prices are dropping, I'd opt for a 450-500w smps so that I could upgrade my gpu later, when I decided to upgrade my monitor. Infact, if I were you, I'd hold off on the HDD and RAM and get a larger monitor now. It'll add to your computing experience more than the additional RAM or HDD would. 20" LCD's are going for about Rs.6500 these days.

So, if I were you I'd buy:
20"lcd monitor: Rs.6500
600VA ups: Rs.1500
400w smps : Rs. 2500

That would leave about 1500 for the gpu. I'd wait a bit and see how nvidias answer to the 5600 series is priced, and then decide what to buy.
In the meantime you can game on your 7600gs, as long as you don't play the latest games, and tone down the settings a bit.

Thanks for taking your time out for such a detailed answer.
Few questions though:
1.) What if just add 1 more stick of 1 GB. ( I am not sure of how does dual channel work, If I have 3 sticks wil 2 work in dual channel and other one solely). What the current price of Corsair 1 GB 667 Mhz value select ram?
2.) HDD has to be Purchased as I am runnung out of Space.
3.) I curently has a 600 VA ups and yes it do work even with CRT and speakers connected to it. But as it has started showing its age so looking for a new one. I'll see if this can be repaired; if yes then buy a new one 600 VA and use both. 1 for CRT+ Speakers. 2nd for PC.
4.) Playing on the 7600 GS is real pain. What if I buy a 4670 now and upgrade to 6XXX series once it launced and price settled.

1) if you have 3 sticks it won't work in dual channel
2) cool..buy a 1 tb hdd..they're really cheap right now.
3) just change the battery of the ups, no need to buy a new one.
4) if you get the 4670 now, you should be alright until you upgrade your monitor.
