Hi

i am opening this thread to clear some of the doubts i have regarding a PC upgrade.

I have got a XFX 680i LT MOBO which can handle procco's upto core2quad Q6600.

I wanted to upgrade my PC but didn't want to spend a bomb on it so had benched the idea fora while.

Recently i saw some Q6600's on sale so i thought why not switch to the quad bandwagon.

I presently own a E7200.

All i wanted to know is what is the difference in performance of a Q6600 to that of let's say a core i5 2300.

I know i will get a lot of flak for this comparison but as i said i didn't want to spend a bomb but at the same time i didn't

want the procco to be a bottle neck for a GFX card upgerade.

I presently have a 9800GT which i plan to upgrade to 560TI which i cant do presently since my present procco

E7200 would be a bottleneck for the GFX card performance.

Also would the Q6600 guarantee a 50% performance jump over my present E7200??

Thanks for reading.

No you would not feel the difference between E7200 and Q6600 both perform pretty similarily for the uses you have in mind. i3 2100 would be the best bet for you.

Well, how much are you getting the Q6600 for? If it's anything like 3-4k (should be, athlon II X4s selling in that range, 3 years newer product), then go ahead.

AnandTech - Bench - CPU

You should see an improvement. I have a Q6600. and back in it's time it was a classic quad core product that is running pretty well even today. I might upgrade when the next generation Intel processors come out but I'm pretty happy with my system right now.

With your board you can even OC it to 3Ghz at the very minimum.

The only improvement you will get if we read the benchmarks correctly is in -- RENDERING.

Rest almost all single / light threaded workloads will see no discernible improvement. Kind of pointless upgrading it just to see a minor increment in render times; in my opinion stick to the E7200 until you can buy the current crop of processors OR if you are a really patient cat @sumatrix you can go for Intel Haswell processors when they release in Q1 2013.

Just my line of thought on the matter, Cheerio!!

Comparing the two generations of Intel processors is a bit of an injustice to the older Quads because --
  • Older generation processor were locked to DDR II as well as FSB which was the biggest performance block.
  • current generation Core processors have a integrated memory controller on die, something again lacking in the older family.
  • they both have different architecture philosophy behind them, whilst the Core Q6600 is two dual-core processors slapped onto one common die, the Core i5 processor currently have a native quad-core layout with independent resource allocation to the cores.

Maybe in RENDER times Sumatrix you will see ~30% -->40% lead, apart from that nowhere else will you get a drastic 50% increment in performance.

Both the processors will be equally chocking to a current generation graphics card. And if I were you I would be waiting for the nVidia GTX 660Ti before making any purchases; the GTX 560Ti is old and easily outclassed by the HD 6950 / HD 7850 cards from AMD.

Hope this helps, Cheerio!!

@ALPHA17 : Thanks a lot for the explanation,cleared a lot of doubts.

I was not comparing the core 2 quad's with the present genenration cpu's .was just comparing the core 2 duao with the core 2 quad's . thought gaming does use up a lot of cpu resources hence the

thought process core 2 quad=2* core 2 duo's processing power.

Was thinking of whether to just upgrade a desktop and stick on for a year atleast or just jump into the lappy gaming bandwagon by buying a lappy with gtx660m or the gtx675m on board graphics card

for around a lakh. will those lappy's be future proof atleast for 2 yrs were in at the end of 2 yrs i might still be able to play the new generation games albeit at a lower setting.

Heard that the new inspiron with gt540m on board can play crysis 2 on high settings so i guess a gtx675m will be an overkill at this time and might be the best bet at future proofing.

What is your opinion??
