I really need help with the specs of a new computer i want to get. Ive got the specs ive seen in a good price range, but id like advice on whether i should get a better graphics card and more ram, and what brandsto get.
Im wanting it to last atleast another 3 years, and for it to run any new games like halo3 or half life on full graphic settings and not chug away.

500 watt power supply
CPU Core 2 duo 6600 2.4 ghz
asus p5b motherboard
2Gigs DDR800 RAM
ASUS 8600 GT shader model 256 memory
250Gig harddrive

Also, should i go quad or not?? so tempted!
thank you!

get yourself a E6750 2.66Ghz - 8500rs excellent VFM IMO, and maybe spend the 5k you save instead of buying a quad and buy a 8800GTS 320MB or a factory oc'ed version of the 8600GT this would probably perform better for gaming, wait till the penryns have all their kinks worked out before plugging in a quad.

Well, with the new Penryns and Phenoms just around the corner,I would suggest wait. There should be price drops very soon for C2D's.Also,Quad Core would be a better option anyday.:hap2:

As far as games go,8600GT will be weak for DX10 games which are almost here..ie if you want the card to last 3 years.Get a 8800GTS 640MB.
You did'nt metion what monitor you'll be using. If you have a 15" then the above rig is fine, otherwise get a better card.

Thanks so much!

Ill be using a 17", and possibly a 22" in the future if i feel like spending the ammount of money. I wanted to go for quad with the prospect of games probably needing that processing power in a year or two's time, but I think spending the money on a 8800GTS 640MB is a better idea. 5k !! *faints* i cant believe they cost so much, considering the 8600 is only 1500. But then it is worth it.

I have no experience with the Power supply tho, would 500watt be sufficient for a Dual Core and the 8800?

45nm processors will give you more than 20% improvement in performance . so wait wait . or take a good motherboard which has compability with Penryn

That's exactly what I would do.In about 2 months we will have the next gen proccy's. Do you really want to upgrade right now and later watch evryone upgrade to the new Penryns? Also dont forget there will defitntly be price drops in the current C2D line up.

So what i'm saying is that by waitng a little longer you win either ways. You can get the latest Penryn or a cheaper Conroe.I know it's hard but you will be glad you waited ,trust me.:hap2:

well penryns only the higher models will be released in this yr and will be terribly overpriced at the starting (correct me if im wrong:ashamed: )....wont it be like jan-feb before we can get some decent penryn VFM??....:S

also 9*** series are on their way...with them the x38 chipset....

frm what i can see the upgrade is now or like around december end to get the best deals...

PS :: Please correct me if im wrong...:ashamed:

I would also suggest waiting if your present rig is doing ok. As Homer mentioned, even if the penryns are expensive, the C2Ds would become cheaper.

@OP,

1. Purchase a computer with the intention of upgrading a few parts every year. Don't expect the same system to last you 3 years and still play all the new games released in the mean time.

2. Don't wait! Buy now if you must. Get a Penryn* supported board and Intel Q6600. With future compatibility at hand, you can always sell your Quad and opt for the latest processor anytime.

* - Penryn is the successor to Merom. WolfDale is the desktop version of Penryn.
