Phase Change Memory ( PCM ) could be arriving as an alternative to flash memory soon , Micron being the first manfacturer bringing PCM to feature phones with plans for smartphones and tablets later .
Micron has announced high-volume availability of 45nm PCM for mobile devices , which will come in multi-chip package having 1Gigabit of PCM along with 512 Megabit LPDDR2 . Smartphones and Tablets require higher capacities , which Micron will target in future with higher density and smaller chips .
Micron says ," PCM provides enhanced boot time, simplifies software development and boosts performance with overwrite capability. It also provides very low power consumption and extremely high reliability. In addition, the design-optimizing shared interface between LPDDR2 and PCM is fully compliant with JEDEC industry standards."
