We had a chance to down clock Phenom 9700 to 2.2GHz and check some scores of the Phenom 9500. We set the multiplier to 11 and checked the 3Dmark06 score. Phenom 2.2GHz will be the lowest priced one around and it will sell for only €169.

We scored 9381 marks and Sanjin of Fudzilla scored 9511 with Intel Core 2 Duo 6800 at 3GHz. It is still not a fair comparison, as we compared quad core with dual core, but you have to bear in mind that Intel works at 3.0GHz while Phenom 9500 works at 2.2GHz and still scores just a few marks less than Intel.

At least in this test, Phenom 9500 at 2.2GHz doesn’t look that bad at all, but we need a CPU to do some in-depth investigation on the real performance. Here is the proof.

So they compared a Quad with Dual. Not at all surprising if it beat a 3ghz Dual. try comparing it to C2Q, thats where the Phenom will start to struggle.

Wasn't Gigahertz race was considered non-important since long time? I mean four cores running at lower gigahertz would definitely be better in multi-core aware apps compared to two cores with higher cores.

For some reason this whole comparison feels like desperate attempt to build hype or give a push to phenom. I got nothing against AMD, but that's just a feeling I'm getting.

The gigahertz race was not entirely bogus. What really counts is how many instructions per second you process. Which in turn is

Instructions per second = Instructions per cycle * frequency (This is a theoretical maximum of course, but you get the idea). What happens here is that Intel has better IPC AND frequency... which means over all they are kicking a$$. This little downclocking experiment is completely bogus though.

Exactly, why I said that. I know Gigahertz comparision is not entirely bogus... but it's not the ONLY thing that matters now... that's what I meant. :)

i don't see anything wrong if amd is looking at mainstream segment and corporate segment rather than enthusiast ..there recent products have all been priced perfectly..

OT...cant wait to get 3850 gpu from amd..

the phenoms wud not be bad if they are priced effectively..

but under enthusiast segment it does not look to be tht impressive.

The thing is, unless they can price themselves low enough and produce enough volume, they are never going to be able to do anything in the mainstream and corporate segments. Those segments are pretty price sensitive and have low margins (so you need a lot of volume to make up).
