Well I don't know... somebody can try
It is a well-known fact that AMD has been carving out triple-core and dual-core Phenom/Phenom II series processors out of complete Agena/Deneb dice with one or two cores disabled. In a fresh revelation, a Korean enthusiast claims to have discovered that it is rather easy to unlock the disabled core on Phenom II X3 processors, provided the motherboard supports the Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) feature that is meant to enhance overclocking using AMD's Overdrive software. The enthusiast claims the soft-mod to have worked in his/her case, where a Phenom II X3 710 was paired with a Biostar TA790GX 128M motherboard. The CPU was overclocked to 3.12 GHz, with a vCore setting of 1.37 V.

The method employed: Set the appropriate BIOS setting for the Advanced Clock Calibration feature to "Auto", save settings and restart. The system will be able to deal with the disabled core, and off load some work to it. The processor with the "additional" core was tested to be Prime95 stable and was able to boost 3DMark06 CPU score by as much as 1,000 points. Let the screenshots below speak for themselves:

dont believe it would work. Guy is lucky thats about it. Like Sidhu said the fourth core is usually weak or has some kind of defect or a low quality L2, which is why they MAY be designated as X3. But this guy is just plain lucky, not going to work for too many people.

^ no its not fake, X3s r low quality X4s, 4th core wont be stable, it will be fixed by BIOS revision soon.

To meet demand, there's always the possibility that they're disabling the 4th core even on perfectly functioning dice.

Yesterday, a user posted an interesting piece of discovery in our forums and that had prompted enthusiasts to try for themselves. Till now, several users have reported success with the unlocking of the Phenom II X3 processors. To verify those claims, board makers too had done some internal testings and so far achieve some success as well. Above is test done on the DFI 790FX board and similar success stories are reported from the labs from Biostar, Gigabyte and others as well.

From what we know, only 0904 batches of Phenom II X3 can be unlocked. Basically, it just uses ACC core to trick the CPU to enable 4th core that has been classed unstable by AMD. However, not all unlocked Phenom II X3 will be stable so you will need some luck here.

Phenom II X3 processors are selling in the States for US$150 and if you wish to get locally in Singapore, the only place you can find them are in Cybermind, retailing for S$246. Last checked their batch is 0904BPMW.........
Now who wants to play the game of lottery. The great thing about the game is that you can't lose :ohyeah:

Doubt we'd be getting any 0904 batches by the time its launched here. Can't they screw up on some of the later batches as well

i think they will.. if they are doin it purposely :P
mayb this will compensate for overvolted intel chips :P

Phenom-II X3 is not with a disabled core to unlock. actually when the fabrication process of Phenom-II X4 is going, there is not chance that all 4 cores will be fabricated correctly. some of the phenom will have one core damaged, which is not stable.

These processors will come in to Market as PHENOM-II X3..

Some of the 790GX bios has reportedly showed this DEAD core as working one's and detected. this is a bug in 790GX mobo..

You can never get a 4th core working stable like that..

if it was working AMD would have probably selling it as X4 only..

they have proper testing process for cores before sending out to market..

Not necessarily.. :cool2:

this is where economies of scale step in. Even in the past, manufacturers have been known cripple a higher end product and sell it as a lower end product. Used/Still happens quiet a lot in the GPU market.
