Hello folks,

Been a while since i last visited the forums. Well, when you've finally bit the bullet, and brought yourself a cool Quadcore, and CM692, you are just much much busier!

Anyways, here is a collection of Images that i've shot at Mumbai Airport. We have this hobby called Planespotting, wherein you watch aircrafts of different types, makes, registrations, countries, liveries, etc and try to capture them in your Memory Card or get their Registrations in your Reg Log Book. The hobby generally develops to people who are one way or the other associated with Aviation, or the Airline Industry, or for some, even residing near an Airport, or under the Approach path does the good. Some of the Enthusiasts then go on to become Pilots, or Aircraft Maintenance Engineers.

The Turkish Airlines Airbus A340 that skidded off the Runway at Mumbai last Monsoons. It threw Airline schedules out of gear, at Mumbai Airport. You can see the recovery work under progress, to bring her out of slush/mud, and back onto the Runway



This A320 beauty from Indian Airlines is 22 years old, and the only Airline in the World to have Double-Bogie Main Landing Gear (MLG)

Finnair MD-11 holding short of Runway 27 at BOM. Finnair is the Airline that advertises its fastest connection to Europe, and Americas, partly due to its strategic location in Continental Europe. Most routes to US, have to go high up the Norther Hemisphere, as that is the shortest possible route to US E. Coast

Actually 'All of the Above' in my case. I'm under the path of Mumbai's secondary Runway Approach, and my father worked for an Airline.

Here is one more:

The Wing of a Boeing 777. If you can observe closely, the Wing curves upwards as the Aircraft goes into high Descent/Ascent rate (i.e higher Vertical Speeds) or Drastic Lift changing conditions.

Indeed! Most people don't know much about this Aircraft type. These were developed by both Lockheed and McDonnell Douglas, to serve markets that were too small to be served by a BIG 747. The 4 Engined 747 (or Jumbo Jet, as its fondly called) could easily cross the Atlantic Ocean, even if one of its engine failed. The twin engined aircraft back in those days were not allowed on TransAtlantic routes due to lack of suitable Alternate Airports enroute, just incase there was an Engine Failure situation. Hence, these 2 manufacturers came up with this smaller than 747, triple Engined Aircraft that had just the right capacity, and more importantly, the extra Engine mounted on the Tail as an extra resource against Transatlantic Engine failures.
 
Emirates 503 Heavy has Lined Up at BOM Rwy 27. One gets about 4-6 seconds to shoot this, and in that, the pod shouldn't cause Motion Blur.

 
I flew into IGI Delhi a few weeks back and saw these 3 IAF IL-76 transport/mid air refuel aircrafts in the parking bay when you go to Aero City Metro Station by the airport shuttle. These would make for some awesome pictures.

These are the newer variants of the classic tri-jet design, the older DC-10's had a high-set tail T they had problems as they did not have a redundant transmission system on the tail and if the lug nut wore out OR was not properly maintained, the result could be nasty.

All in all great pictures, Sire. But no military ones I would've liked if there were a few military TPT's included.

The IL-76 and the IL-78 are very distinct aircraft's Sire, here is the difference --

This here is the IL-76 MD, it is the staple of IAF Heavy TPT fleet and has a carrying capacity of ~45 Short Tons and very noisy cavernous space. It wil be phased out / complemented by the C-117 Globemaster III.

And this here is the IL-78 MKI, note the additional fuel tanks / pump relays attached on the extremities of the wings, from where the fuel pipes are running towards the SU-30 MKI's

I generally spend hours watching plane spotting (and other aviation related) videos on the tube. Very few from India though.

Oh...and I also log flight hours on <acronym title='For Sale' class='bbc ipSeoAcronym'>FS</acronym> 2K4 when I get the time.

@ALPHA17: Thats an awesome perspective of the IL-76 there. That Image looks like its from somewhere in the US. Op Red Flag ?

Many IL-76/IL-78s are based at DEL and IXC (Chandigarh). They ferry a lot of Resources to LEH for our armed forces.

I haven't had the chance to shoot Military yet, either in BOM or Yelahanka. Maybe next time.

PS: Feels great to be Active again on TE. Reminiscing those old days of 2009 when I was rummaging through various sections over C2D vs C2Q !

The IL-78 MKI is shot through the cockpit of a SU-30 MKI [Flanker-H], waiting for in-flight refuelling while going OR returning from the OP. Red Flag exercise 2008.

I do know that I have visited Indian Forward Advanced Landing Grounds [we call them ALGs in military parlance], flying in one of these 'Gajraj' as the IL-76 family is christened in the IAF. Once you have used these aircraft for commuting, you learn a few things, such as --
  • The Economy Class in regular airlines is comfortable and spacious.
  • You know the sound-proofing is really effective in private airlines.
  • You know a flight delayed by 2 hours is okay, a flight not coming in a day means emergency rations for some of our soldiers stationed in Siachen.

That is new to me. The IAF Gajraj making its mark in Hawaii! Really not heard of it being there before.

Absolutely true regarding the latter part. What the American stand-up comedy guy (with Indian Roots) [forgot his name] said about his experience of being transported to a US Aircraft Carrier to entertain the troops is very true! Thats why I dont create a fuss about air travel, whatever the experience may be. Just take it in your stride, and enjoy the LIFT.

Going slightly off topic here.

I am not sure if you guys have noticed this but some airlines do not have row no. 13 whereas some others do! I happened to travel to my hometown via Indigo this time and noticed that the emergency seats are at row 12 and 13. I usually prefer the emergency rows owing to the more spacious leg room, so when the counter guy handed me over the boarding pass I was flummoxed when it read 13 B!

I recall Spicejet did not have row 13. Most hotels and lodgings don't have room no. 13 either. Some don't have a floor no. 13 as well.
